Her failure to produce a male heir was ultimately the twist of fate that paved the way for her improbable rule as a cross-dressing king.

Story
It is often thought that the story of Tutankhamun ended when the thousands of items discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon were transported to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and put on display. But there is far more to the story. Tutankhamun and the Tomb that Changed the World explores the 100 years of research on Tutankhamun that have taken place since the tomb's discovery, from the several objects in the tomb made of meteoritic iron that came from outer space to new evidence that shows that Tutankhamun may actually have been a warrior who went into battle.

Story
Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator. Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order.

There are few things more in common across cultures than the belief in ghosts. Ghosts inhabit something of the very essence of what it is to be human. Whether we personally 'believe' or not, we are all aware of ghosts and the rich mythologies and rituals surrounding them. They have inspired, fascinated and frightened us for centuries - yet most of us are only familiar with the vengeful apparitions of Shakespeare, or the ghastly spectres haunting the pages of 19th-century Gothic literature. But their origins are much, much older.

Story
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Story
The great pyramids of Giza have intrigued humanity for thousands of years. Questions about the construction and the purpose of these majestic monuments have existed since the middle period of ancient Egyptian civilization; in the sixth century B.C., Herodotus was the first of generations of explorers to travel to Egypt in an attempt to unlock their secrets. Recent cutting-edge research has uncovered information, unimaginable to previous generations, about how and why they were built.

Story
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

A complete A to Z of every Egyptian Dynasty
I had the pleasure of travelling through Egypt and this book was able to fill in some gaps. The narrator is excellent and Barbara Mertz is a master story-teller. She is able to mix facts with fiction and humour, which is the perfect combination to keep one listening.

Too snarky for me
I didn't finish this book. The content was well organized and informative, but its tone ruined it for me. It was sarcastic and snide. The narrator delivered it as the writing demanded, but I could only imagine her smirking and rolling her eyes as she conveyed the author's information, observations, and opinions.
I've always been interested in ancient Egypt, and I wish this had been written and spoken in an intelligent, forthright manner.

Wonderful! Simply Wonderful!
The narrator and author harmonize brilliantly in this audiobook to give a sassy, intelligent, witty history of the ancient kings and queens of Egypt. Very insightful theories on the causality of the intermediate periods, and a few poignant instances fitted in. This is well worth the listen for any armchair egyptologist or academic.

Informative but also a bit overwhelming
This book covers the history of Ancient Egypt from the Stone Age settlements through to the reign of Cleopatra and the Roman Invasion. While this was very interesting, it is a bit dated at this point since it was written in 1964. Also, some of this information is biased, but she does usually inform you of it, so you need to be aware of that going into this.
Overall, while this was informative, it was also a bit overwhelming with the amount of information presented in it, especially in the audio format. Also, I could have done with less opinions and speculations and more of the facts as they were known at the time.
Also, I didn’t know before I started reading this book that Barbara Mertz is also Elizabeth Peters, and I love that she also writes nonfiction.

Entertaining and educational
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author took what could be a very dry subject, a long history of an ancient people, and made it truly come alive with humor, “gossip”, and fun insights into the world of Egyptologists. It truly shows historians, as well as the ancients, as just as human as the rest of us.
The narrator is a joy to listen to as well.
