Story
Saul Bellow evokes all the rich colors and exotic customs of a highly imaginary Africa in this acclaimed comic novel about a middle-aged American millionaire who, seeking a new, more rewarding life, descends upon an African tribe. Henderson's awesome feats of strength and his unbridled passion for life win him the admiration of the tribe - but it is his gift for making rain that turns him from mere hero into messiah. A hilarious, often ribald story, Henderson the Rain King is also a profound look at the forces that drive a man through life.

Mr. Artur Sammler is, above all, a man who has lasted, from the civilized pleasures of English life in the 1920s and 30s through the war and death camps in Poland. Moving now through the chaotic and dangerous streets of New York's Upper West Side, Mr. Sammler is attentive to everything, and appalled by nothing. He brings the same dispassionate curiosity to the activities of a black pickpocket on an uptown bus, the details of his niece Angela's sex life, and his daughter's lunacy as he does to the extraordinary theories of one Dr. V. Govinda Lal on the use we are to make of the moon.

The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck's vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads, transporting the lost and the lonely, the good and the greedy, the stupid and the scheming, the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and, possibly, toward the promise of the future. Story
Louis-Ferdinand Celine's revulsion and anger at what he considered the idiocy and hypocrisy of society explodes from nearly every minute of this novel. Filled with slang and obscenities and written in raw, colloquial language, Journey to the End of the Night is a literary symphony of violence, cruelty, and obscene nihilism. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932, but quickly became a success with the public in Europe, and later in America.

With his larger-than-life characters, irony, wisdom, and unique humor, Bellow presents a sharp, rich, and funny world that is infinitely surprising. With a preface by Janice Bellow and an introduction by James Wood, this is a collection to treasure for longtime Saul Bellow fans and an excellent introduction for new listeners.

A wildly comic send-up of Irish literature and culture, At Swim-Two-Birds is the story of a young, lazy, and frequently drunk Irish college student who lives with his curmudgeonly uncle in Dublin. When not in bed (where he seems to spend most of his time) or reading, he is composing a mischief-filled novel about Dermot Trellis, a second-rate author whose characters ultimately rebel against him and seek vengeance. From drugging him as he sleeps to dropping the ceiling on his head, these figures of Irish myth make Trellis pay dearly for his bad writing.

The Counterlife is about people enacting their dreams of renewal and escape, some of them going so far as to risk their lives to alter seemingly irreversible destinies. Wherever they may find themselves, the characters of The Counterlife are tempted unceasingly by the prospect of an alternative existence that can reverse their fate. Illuminating these lives in transition and guiding us through the book's evocative landscapes, familiar and foreign, is the mind of the novelist Nathan Zuckerman.

Story
In music, counterpoint is the art of writing melodies that play in conjunction with one another, according to a strict set of rules, in order to emphasize the melody by contrast. In debate, point/counterpoint is a means of persuasion in which the speaker begins by conceding to their opponent’s argument before refuting it wholeheartedly. Aldous Huxley follows these traditions in his masterpiece Point Counter Point. The polarity between passion and reason in the intellectual life of the 1920s is demonstrated both in form and in theme in Huxley’s ambitious satire.

Great characterization, weak plot line
The reader and the author's gift for narrative make the scenes and characters come to life. But at the end, its hard not to long for some of the traditional elements of fiction, like a story that leads to a conflict, and to an eventual reconciliation.

Amazed that I found it so boring
I hadn't ever read Saul Bellow before and was prepared by the many positive critiques of this and other novels to be delighted and enthralled. And I was amazed to find the story so boring. I couldn't get past the third chapter. I didn't like anyone. Didn't find it interesting. Didn't care at all about where it might be headed. I think I am the exception to the thousands of Bellow fans who loved him madly. Read and make up your own mind. Maybe I'll try it again in another few years...

Living The Rudderless Life
Living The Rudderless Life
In a modest Chicago tenement, #augiemarch grew up with two brothers, one extremely ambitious and the other mentally challenged, born to a simple minded, partially blind single mother and an absentee father with the dominant disapproval of a boarder grandmother who had lived a life of splendor in the old country. Though bright, good looking and inclined to hard work, Augie tends to collect people, be they mildly scheming minor politicians, aging childless couples or beautiful young and well-to-do women who want to lure him into their beds and adventures. While an avid reader, Augie doesn't know how to apply his knowledge or complete his formal education as some other elaborate plan comes along, be it ferrying undocumented immigrants across the Canadian border, union organizing at a time when the AFL was at war with the CIO or training eagles to hunt iguanas south of the border. The story spans the period in the run up to the Depression through the post-World War II period where schemes thrive for resourceful and morally flexible Americans in a thriving import-export industry.
Having previously read #hendersontherainking by #saulbellow #theadventuresofaugiemarch is one of Bellow's later works that contributed his future #pulitzerprizeforfiction and the #nobelprizeforliterature , both awarded in 1976. Augie March is also included on the #modernlibrarytop100novels along with Henderson. Part of the #picaresque genre , Augie paved the way for a wave of #antihero stories that are indicative of much of #americanliterature . Having lived for a year in #mexico , I found the descriptions of the people, geography and culture extremely familiar and a bit nostalgic, as I had with #underthevolcano , particularly the eccentricities of the #expat community. As I enjoyed this via #audible , I will certainly keep Augie handy when I find myself on a dark desert highway or adrift to points unknown.

Amazing command of words
Saul BelloW has the ability to put you right in the middle of the action along with frequent philosophical digressions ( Thomas Mann). I could have done without the blood thirsty and uber wealthy girlfriend who decided to buy and train an eaglet to hunt. they eventually travel to Mexico to use this young eagle to hunt some sort of huge flying lizards (Hemingway) needlessly causing a nice old horse to be destroyed and Augie's serious injury.

Odd, Dated and Excellent: Don't Miss It
This book is like On the Road: The Original Scroll - Jack Kerouac. Tone it down a bit and you've got a pretty similar story. In fact, I'd be very surprised if there wasn't an influence of one upon the other though I couldn't specify the direction of flow.
If you haven't experienced Bellow, I'd start with Henderson the Rain King. This book is brilliant but might drag on you if you're not used to the style. Bellow gives a little story and then injects a bit of philosophy or insight. These sparks are beautiful, like having your way lit through a wooded path in the night with the flicking of a lighter that never lights. But that's not a criticism, it's the bright flashes that give snap shots that a steady lighting would only blur.
And there it is. You get this series of flashes of this guy's life. It's a wonderful, flawless romp.
I loved every minute.
