Publisher's summary

In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.

Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.

This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.

Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

Slow burn but good

Loved it. Slow at times but my mom knew the family so it was interesting.

Chilling

This book gave me a legitimate nightmare the same day as I started reading it. May be it coincided with the fact that the same day I finished Omen. But omen hasn't given me nightmares before that.. In fact I don't remeber what book /movie would cause such an effect on me at all. Ray Porter is perfect for this book. Amazing narration as always. The book itself is great, very captivating chilling story. Absolutely loved it... And that nightmare... Totally worth it!

This oldy is still a goody!

Even in 2021, this book continues to creep me out. The unseen the unknown and that DAMNED PORCELAIN LION! I would have sm a shed that into a million pieces!.. you'll see.

Ray Porter does okay, I just wish his voice wasn't so wooden....robotic almost. But, the story makes up for any short-comings!

Good Story, but Ben Stein Sounds More Enthusiastic

I genuinely thought the narrator was generated text-to-speech until the "credits".

Aside from that - pretty decent for essentially being free.

better than the movie

I enjoyed hearing the first hand experience of this well known story. The performance was played well and although the written story varies from the movie, it offers more detail and an after log which are appreciated

Forever will you wonder

Of you’re a horror fanatic, this one is definitely for you! Within this book, the story of Amityville gets told with details that we never got to see in the films or even with mere google. The narration was a bit bland but the story absolutely made up for it.

Cool story, decent narrator

Like most, I think this story is mostly exaggerated. But that doesn't matter to me, I went in thinking it was fiction and just planning on enjoying a spooky story. It was spooky and I enjoyed it. Not the best but decent.

The narrator is mostly monotone throughout the story. He sounds like he's got the skill to be much better but he was directed to be like Documentary narrators.

Amityville a truly horrifying ordeal or not?

A well known story for sure but is it true did the Lutz family really experience demonic activity in there home some say yes others say it's a hoax regardless this story is intriguing to say the least with a great narrator I highly recommend!!!

entertaining but that's about it

I've read the book a long time ago. and seen both movies. I mean it's interesting but, I enjoy the style of the writer and the narrator here but, even believing in the paranormal this seems very sensationalized and dramatized . It may be possible someone doesn't know the story so I won't spoil it. my personal feelings are that the author embellished to make the story better and that's because it's a hoax and was always a hoax which the author may or may not be part of. it's worth a reading whether you believe the story or not.bottom line I enjoyed it but still after 40 years don't believe it.
