Publisher's summary

Twenty years ago, John Costello and his girlfriend, Nadia, became victims of the deranged “Hammer of God”, a serial killer who went after young courting couples in an attempt to “save their souls”. Nadia was killed by the first blow of the hammer. John survived but was physically and psychologically scarred to an extent that few people could comprehend. He withdrew from society and hid in his apartment and emerges now only to work as a crime researcher for a major newspaper.

Damaged he may be, but no one in New Jersey knows more about serial killers than John Costello. So when a new spate of murders starts, all seemingly random and unrelated, John is the only one who can discern the complex pattern that lies behind them. But could this dark knowledge be about to threaten his life?

R. J. Ellory, orphaned at the age of seven and sent to prison for poaching when he was 17, immersed himself in literature and set about learning the craft of writing fiction. He now divides his time between writing and volunteer programs in the areas of drug rehabilitation and youth literacy. He is married with one son.

Critic reviews

“R.J. Ellory’s remarkable talent for probing the unknown establishes him as the master of the genre. The perfect author to read late into the night.” (Clive Cussler)
“This thriller was so gripping it had me holding my breath as I turned the pages...the plot has plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing right up to the final chapter and the graphic descriptions made it difficult to tear myself away.” ( Essentials Magazine)
“Let’s cut to the chase. This is quite simply one of the best cop thrillers you’ll read this year. Or any year. It’s an achievement that parks Ellory’s wagon on the driveway of Michael Connelly, the finest American exponent of the genre, and no higher praise can I give.” ( Peterborough Evening Telegraph)

Different from "Angels," but great.

Ellory captures his characters wonderfully, with essential nuances while still putting together a great plot. This book is not as elegantly written as "Angels," but it is a different type of book. More murder mystery and in a shorter time period.

Think James Lee Burke meeting Ian Rankin somewhere in New York City.

Great narration. Nicely paced and captures the mood of the novel and the characters.
