Surprisingly beautiful

I went into this book worried that I was either going to get a very cheesy talking-dog book or literary puppy-dog eyes (you know, where every chapter is some heartwrenching example of the suffering of man's best friend), but this really was a touching and well-written account of a man's life from his dog's perspective. I found myself struggling alongside both Enzo and Denny, and yes, tears were shed.

Definitely worth a listen. You may want to avoid listening at work, though, unless you're comfortable tearing up in front of your coworkers.

Art of listening to a dog

A dog could have written this. My dog.
She is also literate, loyal, now aging after a long life of watching me, going to work with me every day (except for a few days surrounding the births of each of her 2 litters of 7 puppies; when she took 3 days off, then brought in her whelping box of puppies to hide them in my office).
She has not watched television, but has listened to audiobooks most days of her life, and thus has been educated about the wider world as was Enzo.
This elegant book is a gift; just as Enzo and my dog (and your dog, probably as well) are gifts. Without them we would be very much poorer.

Beautiful (but depressing) tale

Beautiful, creative writing in this first-person (or, in this case, first-dog) tale. Very inventive to hear the entire story told from the dog's perspective. Note: there are a lot of depressing events in this narrative, but they are always described in very clever ways.

More then just a Dog

You find what love is and what everyone is will to go through for Love. Its not a book about Dogs or Racing. its about unconditional love. You will find your self looking back, thinking about the present and what to look forward to in the future. i love it!

You just can't help but love Enzo

I LOVED this story. It was so simple and so true. It took all of that innocence and loyalty and silly happiness that dogs have, got right past my defenses and hit me where it hurt with short and sweet observations on human nature that just rung true. This all while telling an engaging story with characters I believed. They were very real to me and I was sad when I'd finished this book but also felt like I'd been fed some soul food. Do it, buy it!

I love this book

My cousin recommended this book to me partly because she knows I like auto racing. But this was so much more about life than about racing. I laughed, I cried, I got angry and I pondered over the wisdom of this dog and his family.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good weekend read.

It's a Dog's Life

Great plotting and the twist of the narrator being a very smart family dog really boost this novel from the ordinary. Somehow it reminded me of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, sans the existentialism. Quite entertaining!
