How did America end up with a leader who acts so crudely and despotically, and counter to our democratic principles? Why do his followers stick with him, even when he acts against their interests? John Dean, a man with a history of standing up to autocratic presidents, joins with Bob Altemeyer, a psychology professor with a unique area of expertise: authoritarianism. Together, using psychological diagnostic tools, as well as exclusive research and analysis from the Monmouth University Polling Institute, the authors provide us with an eye-opening understanding of the Trump phenomenon.

Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Story
In The Reactionary Mind, Robin traces conservatism back to its roots in the reaction against the French Revolution. He argues that the right was inspired, and is still united, by its hostility to emancipating the lower orders. Some conservatives endorse the free market; others oppose it. Some criticize the state; others celebrate it. Underlying these differences is the impulse to defend power and privilege against movements demanding freedom and equality - while simultaneously making populist appeals to the masses.

Donald Trump will be president again, whether he is on the ballot or not. That is because Trumpism is overtaking the Republican Party and will mount a vigorous comeback, potentially in the hands of a savvier successor. This prophecy will come true, according to Miles Taylor, if we do not learn the lessons of the recent past. With the 2024 election approaching, the formerly “Anonymous” official is back with bombshell revelations and a sobering national forecast. Taylor predicts what could happen inside “Trump 2.0,” the White House of a more competent and more formidable copycat.

Story
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD - a new leader alone cannot fix us.

Editorial reviews
In the nonfiction audiobook The Authoritarians, psychologist Bob Altemeyer shares his research on the aggressive and hostile nature of the authoritarian personality and the rise of the Right-Wing Authoritarian personality in the United States. He wrote the book in 2006, during George W. Bush’s second term as president. In a clear and direct voice, Altemeyer performs his own fascinating work. He details how authoritarianism is destroying traditional conservatism and what this means for the future of American politics and democracy.

A solid listen explaining right-wing followers.
Makes some good points about the mentality that fuels their movements and belief systems. Makes sense of how and why they illogically follow leaders even if it will inevitably lead to ruin. Showcases they are more concerned about what could happen as opposed to what is actually happening. And there was an interesting moment about how people with an authoritarian mentality are more likely to be immoral, aggressive and prejudicial, even from a purely objective standpoint, and that religious delusion and self-righteousness will keep them going on with immoral actions.
The author does a good job of breaking down the information, chapter by chapter, and has a couple of fascinating experiments (like when different types of authoritarians ran a simulation on how to run the world, 18th disastrous results), however the book takes a bit to really get going and his conversational, mildly self-depricating of reading the book was hit or miss as far as taking him seriously. Good read, overall.

Why Do Some Americans Support Despots?
The best book I've found yet, in explaining why some citizens adore Trump. Professor Altemeyer does a brilliant job here. This book was published in 2006...so it wasn't written specifically with President Trump in mind. This makes his analysis all the more objective, IMHO. I finished it in 4 sessions, over two days. It's an absolutely compelling study of the authoritarian mind.

a Must listen
Bob Altemeyer's studies into Authoritarian thinking and operation sheds light on how the more aggressive side of conservatism arguments and actions make sense. at least to the authoritarian.

A Most Important Study
Sited by John Dean's "Conservatives Without Conscience" (another recommended book), Altemeyer summarizes his studies for non-academic reading. This psychological study explains Authoritarian followers and leaders on today's political scene.

Very informative!
This might be the most important book I have listened to. The subject matter is absolutely relevant today, as it was when published.

Needs more about left-wing authoritarians
I am what used to be called a liberal. Even so I would like to have seen more work on left-wing authoritarian followers. Merely by talking, mostly about right wing, it works against the perception of objectivity Or perhaps betrays a lack of it.

Settle Down Authoritarian Readers.
If you misinterpret the message of this book, you will find that it appears to be some professor trashing what appears to be single political groups. He isn't. The book does draw parallels between his theories on human behavior and current political issues, but if, upon reading this book, you find that he is getting too political, you are missing the message. These are observations, not opinions (for the most part).

Important book; not what you think
Altemeyer has an important thesis: we need to be aware of authoritarian followers. The title makes you think the book is about authoritarian leaders, but the real danger is how many of us tend to be sheep-like followers of said leaders. The book is a bit dated, written just as Obama was taking office. I would love to know if he is able to see the same tendency to be sheep-like among the left-leaning Obama fans as he did among the followers of GWB.
The flip-side of being dated is how prescient he is about Donald Trump.
I would caution conservatives to start with a book like The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt. Jumping straight into The Authoritarians is likely to repulse them where they are unable to get beyond the author's bias and appreciate how much truth there is here.

Headline says optional
Mind blowing. Really puts things into perspective and thoughts/assumptions into fact-backed words. It is even more relevant today.

More pertinent now than when it was written
It was almost prophetic. I was aware of many of the ideas it covers, but this book adds a lot of nuance I wasn't familiar with.
