Historia
Immediately following the success of Little Women, Louisa May Alcott sat down to write An-Old Fashioned Girl, expanding on the subject of rich versus poor that she explored in her first novel. It’s a story of a country mouse and a city mouse: 14-year-old Polly Milton travels to Boston for a stay with her friend Fanny Shaw. The wealthy Shaws’ way of life is foreign to Polly who tries to adapt but is quickly labeled “old-fashioned”. Fanny and her friends dress and behave as their elders do, flirting with boys and gossiping.

Resumen del Editor
The six Herdman children are “absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world”. They lie and steal and smoke cigars. They even burned down Fred Shoemaker’s old toolhouse. Now they’re taking over the Christmas pageant.
The Herdmans have never heard the Christmas story before, and they don’t know anything about shepherds or Wise Men. When Imogene hears about the swaddling clothes, she demands to know why anyone would tie up a baby and put him in a feedbox. Leroy, Claude, and Ollie are planning on a gift that means much more than gold, frankincense, and myrrh - the ham from their Christmas basket.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, now also a television movie, has been a favorite of children and their parents since 1972. As C.J. Critt’s spirited narration captures the lively and outrageous spin that the Herdmans put on the Nativity scene, listeners will delight in this unusual and refreshing interpretation of Christmas.

"When I was little I would think of ways to kill my daddy. I would figure out this or that way and run it down through my head until it got easy." So begins the tale of Ellen Foster, the brave and engaging heroine of Kaye Gibbons's first novel, which won the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Wise, funny, affectionate and true, Ellen Foster is, as Walker Percy called it, "The real thing. Which is to say, a lovely, sometimes heart/wrenching novel...."

On Saturday morning, 13-year-old Dicey Tillerman sits in the car at the shopping mall with her younger sister and two brothers. Momma had said, "You be good." Then she walked away. They wait for a day and a night, but Momma never comes back. Finally, Dicey decides the children should go to Bridgeport, Connecticut where Aunt Cilla lives. Maybe Momma is waiting for them there. But they don't have enough money to take the bus. Determined to keep the family together, Dicey sets off on foot with her siblings.

Childhood and adulthood favorite
The humor is just as good as I remember it as a child. My kids and husband thought it hilarious too. Now, as an adult though, I am catching on to the humbling reality of our pride and comfort/familiarity we have with the Christmas story. It is indeed wonderful and to see it through the Herdman's eyes has been a humbling and sobering experience. It also gave me a great opportunity to point out to my kids, that "unchurched" people who might do things/say things we don't as Christian's should not be ostracized but need to be lovingly taught and told the gospel. Not judged and looked down on. It's become a new adulthood favorite as I laughed and choked back tears.

not a very good reader
there are two versions of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. In this particular version the narrator is not very good. She does not seem to use the proper inflection to give you the feel of the story so to speak. However the other recording of This Book the narrator is spot-on! I will definitely be listening to the other version from here on out. Do yourself a favor by the other one it's the exact same story just read in a much better way!

The Horrible Herdmans make me smile
I first heard this story in church. Our pastor told the (abbreviated) story in church one morning as his sermon and I was hooked. Several years ago, a TV movie starring Loretta Swit was made from this book and it was just as charming as the book is. This should be on everyone's list to read at Christmas time.
