Publisher's summary

A usurped prince prepares to take up the mantle of a deadly assassin and reclaim his kingdom, his people, and his slain gods in this epic fantasy from a USA Today bestselling author.

Cyrus was only twelve years old when his gods were slain, his country invaded, and his parents—the king and queen—beheaded in front of him. Held prisoner in the invader's court for years, Cyrus is suddenly given a chance to escape and claim his revenge when a mysterious group of revolutionaries comes looking for a figurehead. They need a hero to strike fear into the hearts of the imperial and to inspire and unite the people. They need someone to take up the skull mask and swords and to become the legendary "Vagrant"—an unparalleled hero and assassin of otherworldly skill.

But all is not as it seems. Creating the illusion of a hero is the work of many, and Cyrus will soon discover the true price of his vengeance.

Another solid story!

If you like David's Shadow dance series, you'll like this too. They have a very similar feel about them.

Great Book but Imani isn’t right

I loved this book and Devante Johnson did great but I dreaded every time the female characters came up because Imani Parks could not voice the characters well at all. If they keep her maybe she won’t sound so monotone in the next book and actually convey emotion through her reading. Honestly I can’t wait for the next book this is my third series I’ve started by Dalglish and I’m ready for more, hopefully we won’t have to wait long.

really enjoyed it

enjoyed tge story immensely... my only problem is with tge female narrator, her voice is fine but her reading and cadence make it hard to follow at times. she takes a sentence and turns it into 2 or 3 sentences because of her pauses which sometimes changes tge context of the sentence. Still.. I loved the story and I am eager to start book 2

lackluster narration

I enjoyed the story but the narrators read so slow
it's almost painful to listen to at times. the male narrator isn't so slow ( I only had to speed him up to 1.20) but the female narrator robs every scene of any intensity or action because she's reading one word every three seconds.

that being said this was a very enjoyable first installment and it's got me excited and curious about what come next

Slowest narration I’ve heard

The book itself was OK, but the narrating was slow and monotone. I had to accelerate the listening speed just to bear it.

Poor narration

I’ve listened to many audiobooks where the narrators help make them wonderful. This book is the opposite. The male narrator speaks like William Shatner and cannot read an entire sentence without multiple, inexplicable stops. The female narrator is just disappointing. What should have been an enjoyable listen became a tortured event I had to stop many times and step away from just so I could get through it.

Very unoriginal. Clearly a socially left leaning author.

The story itself is not horrible but it just seems like I've read it all before. The dialogue has a Joe Ambercrombie feel, just not as good. Meaning there is a lot of cursing and graphic fight scenes. One such scene, a main female character and her girlfriend are holding hands on a bar. An enemy soldier sees them and makes a comment about it. She waits for them to leave and ambushes them with an axe. On one hand, it was the enemy, and they were supposed to be bad guys. However, it was clearly revenge for not accepting her holding a girl's hand, not a strategic attack against an enemy. I found it petty, extreme and unnecessary. Is that really the message the author wants to convey; if they hurt your feelings then chop them and anyone associated with them up into little pieces? The characters that are supposed to be heroes are crude and unlikable. It is the author's art and their prerogative to put whatever they want in their books. I'd prefer it if they just told a story and leave controversial topics for Hollywood is all. I have listened to several hundred book on Audible. This is probably the 3rd one I was unable to even get through the first half. Will not be wasting my money on another of the author's books.
