Publisher's summary
Boston, 1830: In order to pay for his education, medical student Norris Marshall has joined the ranks of local "resurrectionists" those who plunder graveyards and harvest the dead for sale on the black market. But when a distinguished doctor is found murdered and mutilated on university grounds, Norris finds that trafficking in the illicit cadaver trade has made him a prime suspect.
With unflagging suspense and pitch-perfect period detail, The Bone Garden deftly traces the dark mystery at its heart across time and place to a finale as ingeniously conceived as it is shocking.

Story
She's young. She's beautiful. And her corpse, laid out in the office of Boston medical examiner Cat Novak, betrays no secrets - except for a notebook clutched in one stiff hand, seven numbers scrawled inside. When a second victim is discovered, Cat begins to fear that a serial killer is stalking the city streets: a shadowy madman without mercy or apparent motive. The police are sceptical. The mayor won't listen. And Cat's chief suspect is one of the city's most prominent citizens.

Story
London, September 1666. The Great Fire rages through the city, consuming everything in its path. Even the impregnable cathedral of St. Paul's is engulfed in flames and reduced to ruins. Among the crowds watching its destruction is James Marwood, son of a disgraced printer and reluctant government informer. In the aftermath of the fire, a semi-mummified body is discovered in the ashes of St. Paul's, in a tomb that should have been empty. The man's body has been mutilated, and his thumbs have been tied behind his back.

Story
From Louisa May Alcott's beloved classic Little Women, Geraldine Brooks has animated the character of the absent father, March, and crafted a story "filled with the ache of love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man" (Sue Monk Kidd). With "pitch-perfect writing" (USA Today), Brooks follows March as he leaves behind his family to aid the Union cause in the Civil War. His experiences will utterly change his marriage and challenge his most ardently held beliefs.

If you want a thriller, this is not it.
That being said, the story was a good story. I thought about not finishing the book as I did want a thriller. I am glad I did finish it as it was a good story and well written. Sometimes authors write a book just because they have a good story to tell with interesting characters and they are just talented enough to convey that to their readers. That is true of this author and this book. Not scary, not edge of your seat, not dramatic just well written and interesting.

Enjoyed every minute!
I thoroughly enjoyed both the present day story and characters as well as the 19th century storyline and its characters. Listened every spare minute I had and hated it to end!!

Started very slow, almost dropped out.
It took a while to figure out what the story was about. Once I figured out where the story was going it was very interesting

Beautifully performed, well-thought out storyline.
If you could sum up The Bone Garden in three words, what would they be?
Well-developed, fast-paced and fun.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot and the terrific performance kept me intrigued - my dogs were happy because I extended my walks with them just to be able to listen to a few more minutes of the story.
Have you listened to any of Susan Denaker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is my first time listening to Susan Denaker - she is terrific! Her Boston dialect was amazing, as was her Irish accent, and the quality of the myriad of characters she brought to life was stunning.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I relished the time I got to spend listening to the story (while walking my dogs) - it kept me company for many wonderful hours.
Any additional comments?
This was my first audiobook, and I hope it hasn't set the bar too high for me. It was a wonderful introduction.

Riveting
I greatly enjoyed this book! As a labor and delivery nurse (and of Irish decent, whose family immigrated to Boston and then made the journey to San Francisco) I found it particularly interesting for the details provided by the author about the delivery of Care to both laboring patients and the Irish. Some of it was hard to listen to because of the sheer ignorance of the time, but it made me thankful to be an Irish nurse in the 21st century...would like have not been an option in the 19th century.
Well written! Thank you!
