Publisher's summary

A #1 international bestseller, this atmospheric and breathtaking sequel to the “cerebral, immersive page-turner” (The Washington Post) The Wolf and the Watchman explores the darkness hidden beneath the splendor of 18th-century Stockholm.

Stockholm, 1794: A young nobleman, Eric Three Roses, languishes in a hospital as the rest of the city claims that he belongs in a madhouse. Riddled with guilt, he writes down the memories of his lost love—his beautiful wife who died on their wedding night.

The young woman’s mother also mourns her death and, desperate for justice, begs for help from the only person who will listen to her: Jean Mickel Cardell, the one-armed watchman. But she isn’t the only person seeking him out.

Emil, younger brother to the brilliant lawyer and detective Cecil Winge, finds the watchman to demand his late brother’s pocket watch back. Instead, Cardell enlists Emil’s help to discover what really happened at the Three Roses estate that dreaded wedding night.

The City Between the Bridges: 1794 is a suspenseful race for the truth before it’s too late from an author with a “thrilling, unnerving, clever, and beautiful” (Fredrik Backman, #1 New York Times bestselling author) voice.

What happened?

The ending was at top speed and I am devastated. Someone please tell me I am wrong.

Dark and Wild

This book is raw, dark and real. It drags you to a place most people can’t or won’t go. I love it !

Brilliant Sequel

As beautifully executed & grotesque as any Cormac McCarthy or GRRM novel. The 2 novels in this series are the best historical crime fiction I’ve ever read. I can’t wait for the third & the inevitable movie series that’s sure to come. I only hope whoever dramatizes these novels honors the bar set by the author.

Genius

Yes, it is not for the faint hearted but the twists and turns, the OMG moments, are amazing. Ultimate murder mystery. This is the sequel to the City book and bad guy gets what he deserves. Adults only.

Self indulgent depravity with weird ending

I thought this would be a good sequel to “The Wolf and the Watchman, and although a detailed long winded story I felt it had a non stop stream of disgusting details and heart wrenching misery and misfortune.I’m not sure how many more times I want to hear about lice or the French disease
The most disappointing aspect is the last couple of chapters which make zero sense ( maybe to allow a further book to follow this)

Egregious sadism

This author has an amazing ability to depict characters who I begin to care about. In this book they are tormented as much as the victims of the antagonist. I hope I can be self disciplined enough not to try any future volumes in the hopes that any of the good characters might find a path to a better future. There is too much egregious sadism in this book - both by the antagonist and by the author.
