Critic reviews

"This is Rankin at his comic best. He does for England what Spike Milligan does for Ireland. There can be no higher praise" (John Clute, Mail on Sunday)
"We read Rankin for his exuberant salmagundi of old jokes, myths urban and otherwise, catchphrases, liberatingly crazy ideas, running gags, recurring characters and locations, unreliable, autobiogrpahical anecdotes...he becomes funnier the more you read him" (Mat Coward, Independent)

big brian

this is a bit more convoluted than some other works but it pulls together nicely in the end

Trippy

Woah, that was unexpected and awesome. I loved this book and I can honestly say I've never read one like it. I couldn't guess what was going to happen next and it was very imaginative. It was also funny, bonus!

wtf

I honestly don't know what this was? It's either brilliant or terrible. The whole story is wrapped in confusion as though the reader is seeing into the mind of a mentally ill person suffering from delusion. If that is the goal, to present a snapshot of illness, then it certainly did its job.

Madcap escapade

I generally enjoy Mr. Rankin (and his narration is excellent) but, this book was more convoluted than usual.

A bit odd, but it does come together in the end

This one is non linear and a bit surreal, but entertaining all the way. I had to go back and relisted a few times before I realized it makes sense only in the way dreams do for about the first half.

This book has a darker tone

This is my third Robert Rankin story. I came to this writer recently and I was hooked by his narrative, his weird and funny writing. Robert Rankin’s writing is not for everyone you either love him or hate him. If you are a fan of dry British comedy, Monty python, little Britain type of comedy, then this book is for you. Although I found myself laughing out loud for some of lines, this book has a darker feeling than other books, some scenes are really disturbing. I loved how he ends it. He is a brilliant writer and narrator, listening to him reading it really gives his books another depth.
