Publisher's summary

A woman’s discovery of a family she never knew she had uncovers even deeper mysteries in The Day of the Storm from number-one New York Times best-selling author Rosamunde Pilcher.

On the last day of her mother’s life, Rebecca learns she has a family in Cornwall and sets out to find the grandfather and cousin she has never known. But only the enigmatic Joss Gardner, the outsider who seems to be the apple of her grandfather’s eye, can help her understand the dark currents that lie behind her family’s loving reception.

How formulaic for 1975 the story was

I enjoyed the plot and get to revisit the intrigue between men and women as it used to be—when it was better

What I was looking for

A friend recommended this book to me. I decided to try this author. How nice to find a book that isn’t full of graphic sex.

I am mystified by the fact that this is not available at audible.com by any search. I finally found it at Amazon.com in the search there.

Pilcher Calms

I read Rosamunde Pilcher whenever I feel in need of comfort, and the confusingly named The Day of the Storm (it felt like the was a storm every whipstitch) fit that bill. A gorgeous old property, newly found relatives, a lovely innocent heroine and motives for days.

Pilcher’s old flowery style never fails to calm me, but others are correct: this ended very abruptly. Narration was good, especially the purring Molly, and I think what I learned most is I need a butler.

Another treasure

Rosalind Pilcher is my favorite author. I escape to another time for a while which is a gift to myself.

Nice Beach Book

I first found this fabulous author with The Shell Seakers, and I’m pretty sure I’ve purchased all of her books. They’re all wonderful!

This book is entertaining and you get to really appreciate the characters. There’s a bit of a mystery, too, and I hadn’t figured it out.

I would love to have had an epilogue, because I get so attached to the characters and I want to find out what happens next. For sure there were loose ends, but I think the author does that so we can draw our own conclusions. I mean, not everything has to be spelled out. Though I wish it was all tied up in a nice bow.

And I hope the one who stole the desk gets their just desserts.

Great story

Great story and narration. I really enjoy Rosemund Pilcher’s work. Shell Seekers was my favorite.

New Pilcher to me

I had not seen this Pilcher title before. I really enjoy the Pilcher works. This book is no different, liked the story very much.

Not up to the same standards as her major works

I love other books by Rosamunde Pilcher, especially The Shell Seekers and Winter Solstice. Thie one is not in the same leage. I found the main character very weak and frankly I could not like her at all. The sort of plot twist at the end was neither too surprising nor really well woven throughout the book. All in all, the book is readable, but nothing I would recommend to someone who doesn't know and love the author.

Completely abrupt ending

I really enjoyed this and had no idea it would end so quickly with no clear resolution. Overall it’s good but irritating when it feels like the author had to end the book right now and you’re wondering what happens.
