Resumen del Editor

In Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson took science fiction to dazzling new levels. Now, in The Diamond Age, he delivers another stunning tale. Set in 21st-century Shanghai, it is the story of what happens when a state-of-the-art interactive device falls into the hands of a street urchin named Nell. Her life, and the entire future of humanity, is about to be decoded and reprogrammed.

Many good ideas just not put together well

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would make it more like his later books. On top of that if you have read any of his other books you can skip this one. It's all the same, no countries, distopian, and highly technological.

Would you recommend The Diamond Age to your friends? Why or why not?

Not really unless they are really dying for something to read.

What does Jennifer Wiltsie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She is a great narrator and is the best part of the book for me. Male and female voices sounded great.

Audiobook benchmark: Stephenson's and Wiltsie both

Where does The Diamond Age rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Diamond Age is in the top five ranking of audiobooks for me. I don't prefer many preferred women narrators, but Jennifer Wiltsie's name on a project will immediately attract my attention. Her ability to deliver both male and female voices, accents and children is astonishing. Stephenson's ability to weave several yards simultaneously make a very long book more like reading several related books simultaneously.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Diamond Age?

Spoiler alert much? Fine, I'll bite: Chang and Burt's meeting is one of my all-time favorites in literature.

Which character – as performed by Jennifer Wiltsie – was your favorite?

Nell is an easy answer, but I'd have to say Carl Hollywood. For one, I just like the character. For two, her voicing fits my image of him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I "read" this book at a very distinct period in my life. Wiltsie's narration and Stephenson's prose evoke very strong feeling of nostalgia every time I dig into it, but in the best way possible. I think this is one of those pieces of literature that - if you let it - will evoke an intellectual shift in the reader, which is always memorable.

Fantastic Book. Read 3 times! Loved the Narrator.

Compelled through it, even on the 3rd read. Will give you positive passion for the future and things Nanotechnological. The Children's and Women's Heroic perspective, coupled by those of positive Male role-models unites in multicultural and uni-ethic Triumph. of Humanity.

Top 10

one of my top 10 audio books. Neals 3rd book, much more stylistically controlled than Snow Crash, and better edited for length than his later works (eg endless King of the Vagabonds/ Baroque Cycle). Nanotech in book still fun 20 years after publication. Read it!

Amazing scope, good writing, great performance

The book’s rightfully a classic, and the reader is versatile, engaging, and never has you stepping outside the story to think about the acting.

This guy is different.

At first, I hated the the narration. I thought seriously about putting it down and starting another book. It sounded like she narrating inside a cardboard box. I stuck with it and I’m glad I did, the narrator is excellent. She successfully gave each character their own voice and the accents were very good. The story was weird, but I like weird. Some characters popped up then disappeared leaving me wondering what happened with them. The story held my interest and the main character was one you couldn’t help but root for. The ending was like a Monty Python skit. It just stopped. I read this after reading Snow Crash and I can say unequivocally Neal Stephenson has a vivid and wildly interesting imagination.

Fantastic story, excellent narration, bad audio

The audio quality is exceedingly poor, almost as if it was purposely made to sound like an old timey radio broadcast. That being said, the story is phenomenal, and Ms. Wiltsie gives one of the best audio book narrations I've heard, and I'll be looking for more of her work specifically. If you can deal with the audio being a bit underwhelming, I highly recommend The Diamond Age.

almost lost me, but ended up a win

I got a little lost partway through, but the ending made up for it.
Definitely a good voice as well, and I usually am not such a fan of female narrators. I honestly am sad there is only the one book.

Give it a shot, if you like any of his other work I think you will enjoy this one too.

Not as original as Snow Crash

While not disappointed by this book, it was not as fun as Snow Crash. Still worth the credit...
