Publisher's summary
From the acclaimed author of A Cosmology of Monsters ("I loved it"—Stephen King) comes an epic contemporary fantasy, a mixture of The Magicians and It: a story of dark magic, terrible mistakes, and second chances.
"You can never go home again," the saying goes—but Hal, Athena, and Erin have to. In high school, the three were students of the eccentric Professor Marsh, trained in a secret system of magic known as the Dissonance, which is built around harnessing negative emotions: alienation, anger, pain. Then, twenty years ago, something happened that shattered their coven, scattering them across the country, stuck in mundane lives, alone.
But now, terrifying signs and portents (not to mention a pointed Facebook invite) have summoned them back to Clegg, Texas. There, their paths will collide with that of Owen, a closeted teenager from Alabama whose aborted cemetery seance with his crush summoned something far worse: a murderous entity whose desperate, driving purpose includes kidnapping Owen to serve as its Renfield. As Owen tries to outwit his new master, and Hal, Athena, and Erin reckon with how the choices they made as teens might connect to the apocalyptic event unfurling over the Lone Star State, shocking alliances form, old and new romances brew, and three unsuccessful adults and one frightened teen are all that stand between reality and oblivion.
From one of the boldest, most brilliant voices in modern fantastical horror, The Dissonance is a thrilling and beautifully written story of magic and monsters, forgiveness and friendship.
Critic reviews
ONE OF PASTE’S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS
“Dark and enchanting. . . . Hamill weaves a tale of magic, teen angst, [and] the power of enduring friendship. . . . Fantasy readers won’t want to put this down.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“A treat for readers whose nostalgia gravitates to the likes of Stand by Me, Twin Peaks, or, most thematically, Stephen King’s It. In a similar vein to Chuck Wendig’s Miriam Black novels or Stephen Graham Jones’ Indian Lake trilogy, Hamill takes some ordinary young people and puts them through the metaphysical wringer to see what’s left at the end. . . . A wistful, emotional roller coaster.”—Kirkus Reviews
"The most impressive magical feat of The Dissonance are the four teen friends and their complicated, cringy, familiar wart-filled relationship, one imbued with enough love to refill your soul. The result is that this wildly imaginative, thrilling, time-hopping, magic and monsters epic feels authentic and lived in. Not sure how Shaun did it. The jerk."—Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World and A Head Full of Ghosts

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

When a hidden evil emerges from the depths of the ocean, the tight-knit town of Baywood is caught in a climate disaster of mysterious origins: an unusual wave of sea snails enter the estuary and transform wildlife, seascapes, and finally, people. Once infected, residents start “deading”: collapsing and dying, only to resurrect, changed in ways both physical and fundamental. After the government isolates Baywood, paranoia and surveillance run rampant. A newly formed cult called the Risers starts targeting those who are not deading.

At a safe distance from the intrigues of courtly life at Louis XIV’s Versailles, an intellectual crowd of mostly women have been gathering in a Parisian home to share what hostess Marie D’Aulnoy herself has christened contes de fées: fairy tales. Recently ousted from court and still raw from the death of his beloved wife, Charles Perrault finds companionship and creative camaraderie at the salon, where he eagerly joins the storytellers. Their hostess is impressive, fiercely intelligent, but somehow unreadable. She is harboring secrets of her own.

Story
I didn’t believe in the Rule of Three. Not at first. It was just one of those urban myths you hear about all the time. A story my boyfriend told me about a girl cursed by the number three. A girl whose parents had killed themselves after her sibling had died in an accident. Which meant that she was doomed to die too because that’s the Rule of Three. Bad things always happen in threes, they say, and they are right. Because it’s happening again.

Loses some steam in the 3rd act
First two acts were great and then it felt like it got kind of out of character for act 3. I still like the very end, but just felt like the build up was so good and had kind of a weird turn.

THE DISSONANCE: Sophomore novel from Shaun Hammil takes modern fantasy to a new level
There is something magical (no pun intended) in the way that Shaun Hammil writes. In both this, his second novel The Dissonance and his first, the horror epic A Cosmology of Monsters, Hammil weaves a continuous mystery that comes to a satisfying finale. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that is so adept at walking the high wire of world-building, intrigue, and a weaving a pervasive, unyielding interest in his creations that, in story, lasts throughout the decades of a cast of characters' lives.
In The Dissonance a group of school friends discover a secret about the world. As their relationships grow - and you become invested in their hopes, dreams, flaws, and regrets - a world is built around them that is filled with thrilling new ideas and wholly relatable relationships.
It's best not to know too much going in and to allow the world (or perhaps multiple worlds?) to take shape as you enjoy the ride.
In just two novels, Hammil has become one of my favorite authors. The Lovecraftian touch that permeates his work is right up my alley, and his prose is HIGHLY readable and often surprising and delightful.
Run, don't walk. Read The Dissonance. I'd say take a time machine back to its release date so you won't feel like you've been missing out, but time travel is STRICTLY forbidden.

The more you're broken, the more you're magic.
“The Dissonance” by Shaun Hamill is an engaging and immersive read. The characters are relatable and well-developed. I resonated with each character in different ways and cared for them almost immediately, but loved Hal the most. The plot is well-paced, keeping you hooked from start to finish. However, there were times when I wished for more detail and time. Hamill's writing style is accessible and engaging. Soneela Nankani does an amazing job. Her pacing is spot on, and her character voices are distinct and easy to follow, making the audiobook a great experience. While it will be compared to Stephen King’s “It” or “Stranger Things,” I think The Dissonance stands on its own as a welcome addition to whatever we're calling spooky magic mystery teen adventure stories. Overall, it’s a compelling read with memorable characters. Highly recommend!

A fun read.
Plenty of well written characters. Fantasy tinged with Horror. A bit like the magicians but darker with a touch of horror. Definitely worth the read/credit.

Hell yeah!🤘🏼
Just a big fan of magical realism and Shaun pulls it off nicely! The characters stuck with me afterward, which is a sign of a great story.
