Publisher's summary

What if decemancy isn't enough?

Powerful forces threaten the stability of both the West and the entire world. The Eldemari's ambition, a descendant vanquisher: everyone is out for Ian's head. The odds are long, even with Euryphel's Regret and End affinities shifting the rhythm of war.

Ian must plumb the depths of a new area of magic, one he swore off years ago: the forbidden study of the soul—necromancy.

But first, he needs to find a teacher.

The payoff that book 2 developed is delivered here

You might have thought book 2 was slow on action, but that only because it was developing the characters and that payoff is here. Battles ensue, and abilities are push to their limits. Exactly what you're looking for.

Gets better and better

Great story. I love the magic mechanics and the ups and downs of the journey. It is such a good progression story that doesn’t get hung up on minute details. The number of characters don’t bog the story down and the character decisions make sense and are satisfying.
The only thing I can criticize are the dialogue and almost monotonous performance. I don’t mind monotonous, but a little more emotion wouldn’t hurt.

I like it

I look forward to the next book in the series. The city combat was tough to follow with characters that I really don't care too much about. The story is strongest when focused around single/duos and not a battlefront.

It was good… but

The story was a little rambling but all together it was a very good story.

My heart... Why?!?

Such a great book in the series! This one wraps up what feels like the first arch of the series. It brings closure to several ongoing plots and opens plenty more getting book 4 rearing to go. It's finally in this book that I think we really see the characters grow into their potential as relationships are more fully explored. We finally get to see the Eldermarie, her son, and Yuri put more in the spotlight. The end of the book grabs at your heart - get ready for that! Also Ian finally gets to dabble in the more esoteric form of necromancy. All in all, this is probably the best book out of the series so far in my opinion, although they've all been great. Definitely looking forward to 4! Highly recommend this series!

poor choices

I loved the first two books, but this one continues to annoy me with terrible character choices.

I didn't like it.

I remember liking the first two books, however something about this one just struck me as off. perhaps it was the different perspectives, I dislike more than one, or maybe it was because I couldn't remember who was who at the beginning because there was no introduction and the protagonist had three freaking names/titles. or perhaps it was the realization that a lot of the powers the different characters had are typically protagonist powers another books, or maybe it's just the "see the future one" that played such a main role. My favorite part was when he was off by himself, every other part he was just a puppet.
