Publisher's summary

For Gordon Van Zandt, life was one of duty and loyalty to his country, so when 9/11 happened he dropped out of college and joined the Marine Corps. This youthful idealism soon vanished, one fateful day in a war torn city in Iraq. Ten years later, he is still struggling with the ghosts of his past, but must now face a new reality thrust upon him and his family.

North America, Europe, and the Far East have all suffered a devastating Super-EMP attack that has caused catastrophic damage to the power grids and all electrical devices. With nothing working, from cars to phones, and the total collapse of the economic infrastructure, Gordon must fight for limited and fast dwindling resources. He knows survival requires action and cooperation with his neighbors, but as daily life continues to break down so does all sense of civility within his community. With each passing day, Gordon makes choices that would seem extreme in today's world, but necessary in this new world.

Great story, so so performance

The characters are not morally black and white, they hug the line of gray. I enjoyed this originality. Fast paced

Prepper's Always Seem to Get A Bad Reputation

But when the sheet hits the fan, who would you rather have your back? The military aren't appreciated enough either, this story tells a story.

The most non-fiction fiction book that exists!

A modern day 1984 book with contemporary examples and a very surreal future if the world as we know it doesn't change it's course soon. It's the kind of book that really makes you realize that everything contained inside COULD actually happen... and happen in YOUR lifetime.

Engaging Story - Needs a good editor.

First, Hopf is a talented storyteller, and having read some of his later work, I can tell you that he’s improved on a the issues you’ll find in this book. The two main drawbacks come down to lack of a solid editor and less than great narration in the Audible version.

Poor word choice, repetitive phrasing, etc., all things any author deals with. It’s the editor’s job to fix these issues. However things like editing and narration cost money, and one must make due with what they can afford. As is the case with most self published authors, that means seeking out bargain pricing. You get what you pay for.

All that said, this is one of the most engaging series in this genre and I highly recommend it, although if dry, mundane, often monotone narration, rife with easily correctable mispronunciations bothers you, I would probably suggest purchasing the kindle version.

Really great story

I stumbled upon this book randomly from a friend on IG. Needing a new book for long work related drives I went ahead and used one of my credits and I’m glad I did. Even though this is sifi in today’s day in age it definitely something that could happen.

The narrator... ugh

It's on ok story but the narrator is like listening to your grandpa rapping. He is just sooo stiff. No emotion.

Good plot and worth the listen

Would you try another book from G. Michael Hopf and/or Joseph Morton?

I would purchase another book by Hopf and have in fact purchased the next book

Do you think The End needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, and there is a second book

Any additional comments?

While I enjoyed the book, the narration was not the best. I found it difficult to separate the different characters as well as breaks in passages. The narrator blended passages making it difficult to find breaks and the separation of characters as they interacted.

Great story line ruined by a terrible narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The story was really good; however, the narrator was not. He read too fast at times, running characters together. He has a great voice for reading; but did this one poorly.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joseph Morton?

Dick Hill or Ray Porter

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

yes
