Molly Farmer saw the writing on the wall and feared the worst. Her husband wanted out. She knew he secretly resented her for not being able to bare him the children he wanted. Auctioned off, as was occasional custom for some women in those days, she legally married her new husband. Immediately, she began packing up to move with him as he tried to find work in London. But times were hard, and soon Molly had nothing left but the horrible, gnawing and constant hunger in her belly, the clothes on her back, and her new partner in life to share the misery with. Yet despite all that, they both sought work to make ends meet.

But like all things in London then, times were uncertain, and soon she found herself in desperate need, for her life had once more turned everything she knew to be true on its end. She needed help.

That help just might have come in the form of Charles Smith, a gentle heart and man who loves his family. Their stories are each unique, and times force them into new—and scary—relationships for them both. Yet beginnings aren’t often what they appear to be.
