  • Natasha Lyonne: The inimitable actress and producer, best known for her acclaimed roles in Russian Doll and Orange Is the New Black, offers a candid glimpse into her unconventional path to stardom, her pure love of film, and the uncompromising spirit that fuels her unique artistic vision on projects like Russian Doll and Poker Face, heralding in a new generation of filmmaker.
  • Ron Howard: The Oscar-winning director and former child star whose films like Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind have captivated audiences worldwide, reflects on his remarkable transition from Hollywood's most famous child actor to one of the industry's most respected filmmakers.
  • Amy Heckerling: The trailblazing writer and director who defined a generation with the iconic teen comedy Clueless—and, more than a decade prior, directed the original coming-of-age comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High—dissects her influential career, from shattering Hollywood norms to capturing the essence of youth culture with wit and empathy.
  • Richard Linklater: The visionary mind behind cult classics like Dazed and Confused, School of Rock, and the groundbreaking Before trilogy, Linklater shares the philosophical musings and creative processes that have cemented his status as an American auteur.
  • Chloé Zhao: Following her historic Academy Award wins for Nomadland, the Chinese-born filmmaker and advocate for authentic storytelling discusses her journey to the Oscar spotlight and her commitment to amplifying marginalized voices.

Editorial Review

Grab your popcorn, cinephiles!
Growing up, family movie nights and outings to my local cinema were fairly routine. But in adulthood, those embers of a hobby escalated into a blaze of obsession, bolstered by an unlimited monthly pass to my local theater and an ever-expanding media collection. But when the big screen just isn’t enough, I keep an ear out for stories that go behind-the-scenes of some of Hollywood’s biggest hits. The Film Makers does just that by centering candid, deeply personal reflections from some of the modern masters of movie magic. With firsthand insights from acclaimed filmmakers—including Cameron Crowe, Ron Howard, and Chloé Zhao—this Audible Original is a treat for movie buffs and storytelling obsessives alike that rivals even the most delectable of concession stand offerings. —Alanna M., Audible Editor

This was a great collection of film makers who all offered rare insight into their very individual processes. I found if it both entertaining and educational and would recommend this audible original to anyone wanting to know more about directors and what they do.
I was disappointed in all the technical difficulties. I've never had problems like this from any other book or audible original. I could only get it to really work when I listened to the player on my MacBook Pro laptop. When I tried to listen via my phone audible app, Echo device, or Android Auto, the audio book settings were unresponsive and kept starting from the same point, even through I'd already listened to that section several times.
Otherwise, I appreciate the time all these great film makers spent in shedding a least a little light on the mystery of movie making.

Great insight but technical difficulties

I love hearing people describe their creative process and the backstory of their projects. I teach film appreciation and this was a wonderfully inspiring listen. I need to add a Chloe Zhao film to my list of films to teach. All of the filmmakers were generous and fascinating to listen to.

A wonderfully inspiring listen.

Ron Howard was fascinating, Amy Heckerlink was interesting, the rest of them were somewhat good, with the exception being Natasha Lyone, who was unbearable.

Ron Howard has the best commentary.
