Editorial reviews

Listeners are bound to find hints of John Williams' classic novel Stoner throughout this introspective and award-winning short story by Mark Ernest Pothier. Like the titular character from the American classic, Potheir's protagonist is an educator taking a hard look at the life he's lead. Veteran narrator John McLain takes on the challenge of performing this story, and lets his deep, casual tone put the listener right in the backyard with Jim as he tries to maintain his simple way of life, undisturbed by outside influences.

Absorbing and Atmospheric

This short, sometimes brutal story gives us a window into our fragile souls, especially as we grapple with grief, loneliness, and survival of the inner life.

Ending?

A Kindle Single, this was not what I was expecting. Just as the telling was getting interesting, it just ended. I need more. Did the author see the Cain smoker again?!
