Publisher's summary

Lady Marian Lawrence is in London to snare a rich husband to save her family from ruin - a difficult task given her biting wit and lack of beauty. Hiding her true self, Marian is about to win the wealthy and amiable Lord Darley - until the detestable Reginald Montague blocks their path to the altar.

Reginald Montague has vowed to never marry and is determined to keep his bestfriend Darley from being snared by a fortune hunter.

A master of subtle stratagem, Reginald sets out to transform Marian's dislike for him into desire and is caught in his own trap even as Marian struggles to keep her true self a secret and her heart her own.

Loved the story. It is witty and amusing. The hero and heroine are strong and grow to love each other in spite of their early hostilities. Look forward to the rest of the series. The narrator was very good.

Entertaining book

This is a great story about 2 sisters and their mother coming to town to catch a rich husband for one or both of the girls.
There are also 2 guys who have decided they will never get married. Of course the 2 guys meet up with the 2 girls and the boys seem to change their minds. They scramble to choose which girl they want. The sisters are different in personality but both are good characters. There are run down estates, a jugglar/magician, the snooty ton and the wild and crazy cousins. One of the most entertaining characters is the valet to one of the two men. He is funny, exasperating, nimble and quick witted. I was extremely interested through most of the book, but I thought the ending was rushed and sort of flat.

A bit too fluffy and slap stick

Tiny little steam and some would say none. Could be read by 12 year olds. I like mine a bit more grown up. Still cute and easy listen. I generally like Patricia rice. A bit jarring to have American accent for narration and English accents for the characters but it worked well enough so I could listen all the way through. Good for an afternoon listen while I knit.

Story is good narrator is terrible

The story is entertaining but the narrator would be more suited to reading children’s books

Excellent!

I was almost disappointed when I first heard the narrator until she took on the various characters, she was actually very good. the story was a pure delicious, funny and entertaining delight.

Delightful

I really like the overall story and performance, it was nice not to have an over abundance of sex too.

I really did not like the reader

The reader only used an English accent for the dialogue; everything else was read with an American accent. I found this very irritating.

Perils of Pauline

If you are looking for a hot steamy romance this is NOT your book, but if you like light opera and melodrama and semi-humorous romantic caper movies this might be what you are looking for. The reader’s voice lends itself to an air of light absurd comedy rather than impassioned romance. Think more like Jewel of the Nile than Pride and Prejudice. The humor is more of the absurd and ridiculous kind than of Austen’s intellectual biting wit.

Such fun

This book starts out a lot like a Bridgerton, but then it goes nuts. Very creative for the genre, two girls on London for the season looking for wealthy husbands. It takes so many turns and twists that I was laughing out loud.
