Story
Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

Publisher's summary
The Giants in My Midst contains 40 emotive tributes to living people who inspired the author, Masood A. Haqq, to become more than another inner-city statistic. Each of the stories he shares hold principles that are universal to anyone seeking success, especially those that helped him overcome his biggest vice - procrastination. Each dedication is full of compelling stories, vivid descriptions, potent quotes, powerful lessons, and Masood's signature one-liners. These individuals are alchemists in their own right, slowly but surely transforming not only Masood's world but the world for the better. Each feature leads the listener to a more macro truth...we are all history in the making. We are all Giants. We are writing our collective story with each individual deed and are all charged with the responsibility of greatness and glory.
The Giants in My Midst is a beautiful reminder that although it's imperative to honor and remember our leaders from the past, there are giants among us in the here and now that deserve our full attention and support.

Let’s face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us won’t be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that we’re destined to a life of loserdom. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, it’s the only the way we’re ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about.

Stephen A. Smith has never been handed anything, nor was he an overnight success. Growing up poor in Queens, the son of Caribbean immigrants and the youngest of six children, he was a sports-obsessed kid who faced struggles, from undiagnosed dyslexia to getting enough cereal to fill his bowl. As a basketball player at Winston-Salem State University, he got a glimmer of his true calling when he wrote a newspaper column arguing for the retirement of his own Hall of Fame coach, Clarence Gaines.

Thought provoking and leaves you wanting to hear more!
This book is right on time!! I listen to a lot of audible books and this is a great listen. Telling the stories of a demographic that has been so impactful to many, yet the stories have never been told. They transition of self-reflection, to giving honor to those who the author has learned valuable lessons from along the journey of life makes this book more and more captivating as it goes on.
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys being able to learn lessons from someone who has been through life trials that others typically don’t make it out of. You can tell the author is a very gifted writer that will have much more to write on in the future.

Real Life Storytelling in 3D
This is one of the most compelling audiobooks I've ever encountered! You actually walk with the author through this multi-dementional journey of life. Masood paints a picture that turns this audio into a visual experience!

“Paralyzed Perfectionist “
I seen so many dimensions of myself and others that I judged from afar not knowing the full details ( and still don’t) of their stories. Every chapter , every person described I think we all can relate to each other in many ways than just the surface ! Enjoyed this 🫡

Impeccable storytelling!
I listened to this everyday during my commute. Being the author’s sister, I was caught up in the nostalgia of his storytelling about our childhood. So proud of Masood, he was always an amazing writer and his first book is definitely a page turner. Highly recommend!

Amazing Storytelling
This was an amazing narrative that allowed me to have insight into the life of African American Muslims. The author wove a tale of his life and all the lives that touched and shaped him. I appreciate this type of writing, witty and honest.
