Acerca de esta escucha

In this book, John Owen (1616-1683) conveys the importance of the glory of Christ in the life of a believer. Meditating and savoring the glory of Christ transforms us into His image and gives us joy and strength to follow Christ to the end. The Glory of Christ was published in 1684, one year after Owen's death. Throughout the book, you can hear his own longing for the perfect vision of Christ's glory in heaven.

This edition attempts to make Owen's writing more accessible to modern readers. It includes the following updates:
  • Complete and carefully updated text.
  • Sentence-level rewriting and rewording for clarity.
  • Modern English sentence structure.
  • Modern English vocabulary.
  • Updated organization and headings.
  • English Standard Version (ESV) scripture references.
  • Scripture quotations in footnotes.
  • Active table of contents.

Wholeheartedly recommend

We’ve all seen a stunning sunset you cannot take your eyes of, a moment so overwhelming with beauty or joy that time stands still in that instant. C.S. Lewis wrote, “We want…to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it.” (The Weight of Glory)

In prayer there is similarly a spiritual capturing or beholding that the Apostle Paul spoke of, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the LORD, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” (2 Corinthians 3:18) Paul assures us that through communing with the Holy Spirit – while on earth, we may already enjoy heaven in measure.

So not only will we see Him by sight in heaven, but we are called to behold the glory of God by faith, now. This is not too high or too hard, it is for every believer – for those who will seek His face through prayer – in anticipation of the glorious consummation!

The British Theologian John Owen was “doggedly insistent that meditating upon the beatific vision is a
vital practice for all Christians to cultivate” because “our Christian life and thinking should be oriented
toward the hope of the beatific vision, and shaped by the foretaste we receive of it here and now.”

Fresh yet True to the Original

It should go without saying that everyone should listen to John Owen, especially this classic. This would make for a great introduction for people to listen to John Owen. The modernized English is easier to follow, yet it feels true to Owen’s style.
The digital voice is very nice, yet I would have preferred a male narrator for this work.
