Description words easy to read

The stories in the book were well written. I found the book very interesting. Listening to the audio book made it valuable to imagine to see everything happening as reading it.

Some good essays. Others harder to digest.

The cover title was excellent and overall, stories of New Mexico were fantastic. The more anthropological stories were a bit harder to digest and less enjoyable to me.

Tony Hillerman

I enjoyed the first part of the book, the great Taos bank robbery, and portions of the rest of the essays/stories. The last two were full of information, data and facts. I didn't realize we had that kind of revolution going on in the US. They were interesting, but I buy these books for entertainment and escape. This book did not do that. The first story can't carry the whole thing and I'm not active in politics. If I were, I might have known about this happening.

Can't help it, Hillerman fan loves his voice!

Tony is departed, but we have his voice for posterity. This group of stories which he found fascinating is a real treat. I'll probably listen to this repeatedly, just to bring him back, if only in voice and remembrance. Can't get enough of Tony and his daughter-novelist Anne Hillerman.

New Mexico stories from the inside.

Tony Hillerman has the concise descriptive style that appears expansive when exercised on the scale necessary for the landscape. That style comes from much practice. While many of these earlier works are verbose by comparison, they do show humor and a real feeling for the subject matter. The narrator tends to go into a monotone when the story get verbose and drawn out. He reads alot of it as if it were a text book, not an entertainment.

All things considered, I enjoyed and recommend this book.

This Review Needs a Title...

Super great stories about New Mexico...insights into the state. A couple of notable ones are about the 1967 Tierra Amarilla riots and the Navajo who couldn't get the wire strung. Classic New Mexico tales--read 'em!

Interesting

It is an interesting collection of short historic narratives. I have always enjoyed this author's books and this one was very different. Interesting but not as good as his novels!

Jesus, I can’t believe Amazon/Audible requires a headline for reviews!

Great listen and extremely enlightening. Much different than his novels but equally entertaining. Requiring a minimum number of words for a review is stupid.

How Tony Hillerman Got His Start

Yes, it’s Tony Hillerman from his first youthful stories as a cub reporter. He was amazing from the very beginning, when no one knew his name other than the local readers. Immediately, you feel the same quick-witted, careful observation that’s part of his novels; but also, his warmth, humility, humor, and love of New Mexico.

This edition of The Great Taos Bank Robbery has even more stories than the first release, and a foreword written by Hillerman's daughter, who is just as enchanting as her father.
