Resumen del Editor

Audie Award, Fiction, 2013

Margaret Atwood's popular dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale explores a broad range of issues relating to power, gender, and religious politics. Multiple Golden Globe award-winner Claire Danes (Romeo and Juliet, The Hours) gives a stirring performance of this classic in speculative fiction, one of the most powerful and widely read novels of our time.

After a staged terrorist attack kills the President and most of Congress, the government is deposed and taken over by the oppressive and all-controlling Republic of Gilead. Offred, now a Handmaid serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name. Despite the danger, Offred learns to navigate the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life in breaking the rules in hopes of ending this oppression.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“Claire Danes sparkles in this performance…Danes’s Offred is complex, and her flashes of intense strength highlight her vulnerability. This is a consuming listen, thanks to Danes’s emotional subtleties.” (AudioFile)

The Handmaid's Tale by award-winning Canadian author Margaret Atwood was first published in 1985, and has been haunting readers and listeners ever since. This chilling work of fiction depicts a future totalitarian state in which women are completely subjugated, while offering incisive commentary on patriarchy, reproductive justice, misogyny, religious fanaticism, and fascism. The Handmaid's Tale was adapted for television in 2017, and the Hulu series has sparked a renewed interest in the now classic dystopian novel.

frightening future

love Claire Danes! Love the story. Of course it's quite frightening and if we're not careful, this will be our future

A story for more than one era

Excellent writing, compelling story, engaging narrator. Themes that echo today - a thoughtful story. The role of religion in society, a patriarchal mindset, and a devastating ecology all combine and converge artistically.

Great narration for this story.

Between main character tones and differing voices for other characters, Claire Danes narration is perfect.

Disappointed

Interesting concept but did not hold my interest and after listening to the book and the postscript I was left with nothing. I would not recommend the book.

Magnificent

Sometimes the story can be a little difficult to follow since it jumps around a lot in time but otherwise kept me on my toes.

So depressing

I found this to be difficult to listen to as it just got darker and more depressing the further it went. I am going to have to clear my mind with something much less grey.

Better Than The Show

I’d tried watching the show with my girlfriend but couldn’t get into it due to the pacing. The book seems to move at a quicker pace. Claire Dames does a great job. Not the least bit annoying.

good listen

I watched the show before I listened which gave me a better visual understanding of everything even though they are both very different.

Atwood has a story to te!l

I was hooked from the first chapter. The story Offred has to tell is both shocking and allot realistic. If you thought Orwell's 1984 was a shocker. Read The Handmaid's Tale.

Highly recommended. A Book Club suggested reading.
