About this listen

When Lord Montbarry dies suddenly in his Venice palace, and his courier goes missing, suspicion is instantly thrown on his new wife, the beautiful Countess Narona, who has collected his life insurance and fled to America. Montbarry's former fiance, Agnes, still harboring feelings for him, and Henry Westwick, Montbarry's younger brother, decide to investigate this tragedy and head for the palace, now a hotel. Not long after their arrival they experience strange and unsettling occurrences, and the circumstances of Montbarry's death begin to unravel.

Really Really Good Story

Clever murder, ghosts, romance, this is a really good story. The characters are the best and the worst of humankind. My favorite character was the nurse.

Great plot line.

There is a great twist at the end of the book. I always enjoy his work and this was no exception.

Another great work from Wilkie!

I finished this in a day, it kept me intrigued and guessing until the very end! I especially love the way he writes, his stories start out quick and do not feel rushed yet not boring either. Probably my favorite author 😊

moody old-fashioned horror, no in-your-face guts

very well written, spooky, a little love that dosent happen nowadays, no sex, interesting,
and cool for me!

Not my favorite Wilkie Collins

This book was short, but so boring in parts that it seemed much longer. I normally love Victorian novels for their excessive descriptiveness, but his story had very little plot to it and was unduly repetetive. It could easily have been half as long. It's enjoyable in its way, but you can do something else while listening and not really miss much if you zone out here and there. I recently finished "No Name" and it was a much better story. I could sum up the plot of "Haunted Hotel" in two sentences, plus it takes so long to get to the surprise twist in the story that most people will figure it out by the time it's revealed. A lot of other potentially interesting details are omitted though, like the Countess's origins, whether her brother was actually her brother, whether the rumors about her were true, etc.

Extremely dark story

I have read almost all of Wilkie Colin’s books and this is the least appealing. I fair to good story but too dark for me to truly “enjoy!”

Had Trouble Staying with The Haunted Hotel

"The Haunted Hotel" by Wilkie Collins is pretty good mixture of "who done it" and gothic horror-lite. Maybe my ultimate problems were that it seems dated, and I didn't find the characters or the plot very intriguing, although Jonathan Keeble does his best to make it interesting. Since I think "The Woman in White" is a great book by Collins, I would merely say this is second-tier stuff. Best for those who love Wilkie Collins's books and want to read everything he'd written. That's fair enough.
