Publisher's summary

Seconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last 15 years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.

Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker's Guide ("A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.") and a galaxy full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian, Zaphod's girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan), whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.

Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time in between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don't forget to bring a towel!

Good quarantine read

I've read this book with this performer before and it is just great. The funny light hearted story is perfect while living through a time of so much commotion and uncertainty.

loved it, but one characters voice drove me crazy.

This book is quick, funny, and a nice easy ride. Steven Fry has usually got a pleasant voice, but I hated his portrayal of one character so much i couldn't even listen for a small part.

Comes to a dead stop

The ending is.. a bit abrupt. Apparently I was supposed to know that going in. I really enjoyed it otherwise.

Outstanding and unique

I had never read this book before despite playing the text based game on the Atari home computer years ago. I was delighted at how enjoyable the book was. I have never seen any of the TV shows or films based on this book, but they would be hard pressed to live up to the high standards set by this book. The narrator really adds to the enjoyment of the book. I highly recommend this one.

Great characters, great story.

I've been meaning to read this book for quite a long time and was happy to find that it is a much simpler listen then I thought. I thought Stephen Fry did a very good job reading, in the nuances of tone between different characters was spot on. I'm looking forward to getting the rest of the series.
