Story
Understanding Adolf Hitler's ideology provides insights into the mental world of an extremist politics that, over the course of the Third Reich, developed explosive energies culminating in the Second World War and the Holocaust. Too often the theories underlying National Socialism or Nazism are dismissed as an irrational hodgepodge of ideas. Yet that ideology drove Hitler's quest for power in 1933, colored everything in the Third Reich, and transformed him, however briefly, into the most powerful leader in the world.

Story
Heinz Linge worked with Adolf Hitler for a 10 year period from 1935 until the Fuhrer's death in the Berlin bunker in May 1945. He was one of the last to leave the bunker and was responsible for guarding the door while Hitler killed himself. During his years of service, Linge was responsible for all aspects of Hitler's household and was constantly by his side. He claims that only Eva Braun stood closer to Hitler over these years. Through a host of anecdotes and observations, Linge recounts the daily routine in Hitler's household; his eating habits, his foibles, his preferences, his sense of humour, and his private life with Eva Braun.

Nazi Germany occupied most of the European continent, while in Asia, the Second Sino-Japanese War had turned China into a battleground. But these conflicts were not yet inextricably linked - and the United States remained at peace. Hitler’s American Gamble recounts the five days that upended everything: December 7 to 11.

Story
Germany was a deeply divided nation when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came to power in 1933. As the shadow of the swastika lengthened, its citizens quickly came to realize that the Nazis' brutal programme was not optional. Everyone was expected to play their part in "national revival", especially those chosen as sacrificial victims. Life in the Third Reich draws on the recollections of those who lived through the rise and fall of one of the most vicious and sadistic regimes the world has ever seen.

Behind a smokescreen of “preparing students for the new industrial economy,” early progressives had political control in mind. America’s original schools didn’t just make kids memorize facts or learn skills; they taught them to think freely and arrive at wisdom. They assigned the classics, inspired love of God and country, and raised future citizens that changed the world forever.

This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Publisher's summary
For months two captives of the Soviet Army, Otto Guensche, Hitler's adjutant, and Heinz Linge, his personal valet, were interrogated daily, their stories crosschecked, until the NKVD were convinced that they had the fullest possible account of the life of the Furher. In 1949, they presented their work, in a single copy, to Stalin. It is as remarkable for the depth of its insight into Adolf Hitler, from his specific directions to Linge as to how his body was to be burned, to his sense of humor, as for what it does not say, reflecting the prejudices of the intended reader: Joseph Stalin. Nowhere, for instance, does the dossier criticize Hitler's treatment of the Jews.
Today, the 413-page original of Stalin's personal biography of Hitler is a Kremlin treasure and it is said to be held in President Putin's safe. The only other copy, made by order of Stalin's successor, Nikita Khrushchev, in 1959, was deposited in Moscow Party archives under the code number 462A. It was there that Henrik Eberle and Matthias Uhl, two German historians, found it. Available to the public in full for the first time, The Hitler Book presents a captivating, astonishing, and deeply revealing portrait of Hitler, Stalin, and the mutual antagonism of these two dictators, who between them wrought devastation on the European continent.
Critic reviews
"An astonishingly intimate portrait." (The Times [London])
"This revelatory document was an extraordinary find and gives an absorbing, truly disturbing, account of Hitler and his demonic court." (Publishers Weekly)

Story
Despite the outpouring of books, movies, museums, memorials, and courses devoted to the Holocaust, a coherent explanation of why such ghastly carnage erupted from the heart of civilized Europe in the 20th century still seems elusive even 70 years later. Numerous theories have sprouted in an attempt to console ourselves and to point the blame in emotionally satisfying directions - yet none of them are fully convincing.

Fueled by hate, incapable of forming normal human relationships, unwilling to listen to dissenting voices, Adolf Hitler seemed an unlikely leader, and yet he commanded enormous support and was able to exert a powerful influence over those who encountered him. How did Hitler become such an attractive figure to millions of people? That is the question at the core of Hitler's Charisma. Acclaimed historian and documentary filmmaker Laurence Rees examines the nature of Hitler's appeal and reveals the role his supposed "charisma" played in his success.

Story
Heinrich Himmler was an unremarkable-looking man. Yet he was Hitler's top enforcer, in charge of the Gestapo, the SS, and the so-called Final Solution. We can only wonder, as Peter Longerich asks, how such a banal personality could attain such a historically unique position of power. How could the son of a prosperous Bavarian Catholic public servant become the organizer of a system of mass murder spanning the whole of Europe? In the first comprehensive biography of this murderous enigma, Longerich answers those questions with a superb account of Himmler's inner self and outward acts.

Story
In the 70 years since the demise of the Third Reich, there has been a significant transformation in the ways in which the modern world understands Nazism. In this brilliant and eye-opening collection, Richard J. Evans offers a critical commentary on that transformation, exploring how major changes in perspective have informed research and writing on the Third Reich in recent years. Drawing on his most notable writings, Evans reveals the shifting perspectives on Nazism's rise to political power, its economic intricacies, and its subterranean extension into postwar Germany.

In Hitler's Army, Omer Bartov focuses on the titanic struggle between Germany and the Soviet Union—where the vast majority of German troops fought—to show how the savagery of war reshaped the army in Hitler's image. Both brutalized and brutalizing, these soldiers needed to see their bitter sacrifices as noble patriotism and to justify their own atrocities by seeing their victims as subhuman.

Historical Value, But Not For What You Think
What the description doesn't tell you but what you learn in the first few minutes of the introduction is that this book was written to cater to Stalin's personal beliefs, not to present fact. So this book is a good work for describing how the Soviets viewed Hitler and Germany after the fact. This book is not very good history, being based almost solely on the accounts of two minor members of Hitler's staff. It is full of errors, omissions, and distortions. So as a book on the Soviet state of mind, it is worth reading. As a book about Hitler, you could do much better elsewhere.

World-class book
Any additional comments?
This book makes an extended effort to describe the thoughts and motives of enemy leaders and their underlings, while also trying to clarify domestic and continental influences / causes. This book provides a hallmark depiction of World War II.

Too Long
It was interesting at first to hear things from the Soviet perspective and you can tell right away that the report was written with Stalin's beliefs in mind. The novelty though quickly wears off and what you are left reading is a long overly detailed biased description of Hitler and his inner circle. The last two thirds of book feels like it drags on forever.

Interesting, but long
I enjoyed this book because it had a lot of insight into Hitler as a person as well as Socialist Idealogy, but it was very hard to get through, especially because the last few weeks of the war drag on.

not what I expected, wasted credit
After reading this book I must say that I was deeply disappointed in the myopic view of this book. Granted this was written by the soviet for the soviets but if you new nothing about WWII history before you read this book you would never know that the United States, England and the other allies participated in the war. Topics like the D-Day invasion, The Battle of the Bulge, and the North Africa campaign are barely mentioned. According to the book it was the "great soviet army" that won the war and not the Allied Expedetionary Force. With the exception of one refrence to Buchenwald there is no mention of the Holocoust.
My recommendation would be to find a book that has a more electic covering of Hitlers life that includes more that the cingular point of view that the soviets express in this book.
