    Being Black & Having ADHD with Dr. Damon Tweedy

    When we wrote our book, ADHD Is Awesome, one of the areas we wanted to cover more was the under-diagnosis of ADHD amongst minority populations. White children get diagnosed with ADHD at a rate of 11.5% while Black children get diagnosed at a rate of 8.9%. Additionally, studies have shown that Black children with symptoms of ADHD are treated more negatively by teachers and other adults. This week, we talk to Dr. Damon Tweedy, a professor of psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine (and our friend) to learn more.


    Dr. Tweedy is the author of two books, Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine and Facing the Unseen: The Struggle to Center Mental Health in Medicine. His first book made the New York Times bestseller list and was selected by TIME Magazine as a top non-fiction book that year. Dr. Tweedy has been featured in publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and Discover Magazine. We discuss Dr. Tweedy's personal stories about probably having ADHD himself along with the complicated issue of what it means to be Black and have ADHD. I just love this family!

It's been a rough year, but I gotta say, stumbling upon the Holderness Family has been one of my favorite parts. I first saw their hilarious song parodies on Facebook a couple of months ago. I was very excited to see they were writing a book, which is how I found out about the podcast! I laugh, and sometimes cry, but I always learn a little something, and get to see things from a new angle. As a newlywed, I strive to have a relationship like Kim and Penn have as the years go by. I love that they share the tools that help them have such an incredible understanding of each other! Thank you so much for being you, and sharing so much of yourselves!

I love listening to this podcast. So relatable!

This podcast is so relatable and fun to listen to. There are moments of hilarity but there are also moments of deep emotion. Pausing work to listen to y'all

I'm not one of those people who can do my work AND listen to a podcast at the same time, which is a real shame because I really enjoy podcasts ... so ever since I started listening to your podcast, my work has begun to suffer. That should be a star or two off but my boss isn't the one writing this review, so ..........

In the latest episode (re: hobbies), I have to say that you are the only other person I have heard who discusses a strong dislike for the word "should". I went through a phase (may still be going through it) where I would respond to all shoulds with an accusation toward the speaker of being a "should-pusher". It doesn't endear me to people, but just know that I get it and I'm glad that you spoke about it because now I don't feel so weird. Right?

So, yea, keep getting in between me and my work - I enjoy it, even if my boss may not.

Loving the positivity and wellness

I really enjoyed your videos and now your podcast. We have learned so much about the experience of living with ADHD from Penn. My son is ADHD and has been able to relate to Penn. Having a family of ADHD (myself, son, and husband) we feel for Kim because it's hard sometimes, but she has such a great approach to understanding it.

First off let me say I love you guys. Second I can not belive I am the first review on here. That can only be because everyone else has already started listening to you on other platforms, because you guys are great I actually started watching dude dad and came across The target husband's video and I discovered your family's videos and I was hooked from there. I have watched all your videos, "read" your book. Wich I am great full for the extra commentary on the audiobook and now for the past couple of days I have been listening to your podcast im up to the end of 2018. I listen to you ten hours a day while I'm at work. My wife and I both have a mixture of both your personalities and you have helped me understand not only my wife but myself. By far, the best episode!

Okay, I love Penn & Kim, but this speaker was just next level with the knowledge. I think the only thing I didn't like about it is that he stole the show, but I will definitely be listening to this one multiple times. Great job! So glad I could find him through you! :)
