Story
As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

Story
To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

Publisher's summary
Philomena meets The Orphan Train in this suspenseful, provocative novel filled with love, secrets, and deceit - the story of a young unwed mother who is forcibly separated from her daughter at birth and the lengths to which they go to find each other.
In 1950s Quebec, French and English tolerate each other with precarious civility - much like Maggie Hughes' parents. Maggie's English-speaking father has ambitions for his daughter that don't include marriage to the poor French boy on the next farm over. But Maggie's heart is captured by Gabriel Phénix. When she becomes pregnant at 15, her parents force her to give baby Elodie up for adoption and get her life "back on track".
Elodie is raised in Quebec's impoverished orphanage system. It's a precarious enough existence that takes a tragic turn when Elodie, along with thousands of other orphans in Quebec, is declared mentally ill as the result of a new law that provides more funding to psychiatric hospitals than to orphanages. Bright and determined, Elodie withstands abysmal treatment at the nuns' hands, finally earning her freedom at 17, when she is thrust into an alien, often unnerving world.
Maggie, married to a businessman eager to start a family, cannot forget the daughter she was forced to abandon, and a chance reconnection with Gabriel spurs a wrenching choice. As time passes, the stories of Maggie and Elodie intertwine but never touch, until Maggie realizes she must take what she wants from life and go in search of her long-lost daughter, finally reclaiming the truth that has been denied them both.

Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. Is this a true story?
I absolutely love this book it is intriguing, dynamic and fascinating. I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. This is not my go to genre. I normally read urban fiction, love stories and memoirs. My favorite part is the two girls eating at the restaurant. It is so dramatic and I can feel the excitement. What I like about the book (this won’t make sense unless you read the book but…) is the following of the mother and daughter separately but during the same time. I also like that it doesn’t appear to be a work of fiction. I was enthralled and anticipating every new turn. I also can relate to a mother’s love of a child not in her care. I will say no more as not to spoil the book for others. I will end with this, I have never wanted to get to the end of a book so bad and wanting it to never end at the same time.

A captivating story of love, cruelty and destiny.
I loved listening to this story. a very interesting description of a possible life story, involving puppy love, accidental pregnancy and the consequences for all involved. It is a captivating drama with multiple levels.

So much depth.
I loved this story. There were so many characters and life in this story. The flow was perfect. It brought it so many emotions, anger, joy, happiness, sadness.
Must read, but audible is even better.

Little known history, well worth the read
I loved this book. It reminded me of other stories that are based on less known historical facts, such as Orphan Train and Before We Were Yours. This book is set in Quebec tells the story of Maggie from when she was a young girl with a crush on the less well-off French boy next door until she is a grown woman. It also tells the story of Elodie, the child that Maggie is forced to give away when she is a teenager. Told from both perspectives and spanning 25+ years, this book is well worth a read. #DualPOV #Quebec #HistoricalFiction #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Beautifully Written
This book surprised me. It was well written, fluid, romantic, suspenseful, heartbreaking, and much more. I highly recommend it. The heart-wrenching story is told first by the main character and later by both her and her daughter. I will be suggesting this one for my book Club. I'd like to hear what friends think of both the writing and the storylines. I also want to do some research on the time period and situation presented. These children went through the unthinkable.

Outstanding
While I say this is altogether outstanding, I had to stop listening three times. This tragic story was too emotional for me. I felt sadness and extreme anger over what I know happened to those children in the orphanages and mental hospitals of that time.
Superb narration.
