Critic reviews

"The delightfully air-headed wastrel, Bertie Wooster, narrates a number of his adventures with his imperturbable gentleman's gentleman, Jeeves. Jonathan Cecil impersonates Wooster with aplomb." (AudioFile)

Good recording with minor flaws

This set of charming, short stories mostly relate to the Jeeves and Bertie efforts to help Bertie's friend Bingo Little out of the soup. The writing is breezy and hilarious, typical P.G. Wodehouse, with a chatty, conversational style that suits the air-headed but well-meaning Bertie Wooster.

The narration is good and solid, with some very nice voice acting between characters. The reader makes a great Bertie. (The American accent, as mentioned by another reviewer, really is an experience.)

It downloads as one solid block, which is annoying given that you have to search to get to the chapter you want. Also, there is an oddly metallic quality to the recording, and the volume between sections wavers. However, unless you're an audiophile, this isn't too much of a distraction once you get used to it.

All in all a good recording, and worth purchasing for any Wodehouse fan.

Nearly perfect

Loved the story and the reader. However, the slurping noises used for Lord Bittlesham were a bit much.

Nothing like Johnathan Cecil

He brings the story to life as if you are watching it on tv. I’ll listen to anything he reads.

laugh out loud

i've read a handful of the jeeves/wooster books, a couple of the blandings adventures, plus a miscellaneous story or two, and it may just be possible that mr. woodhouse only has a dozen or so story lines and it soesn't matter a bit. he is fantastic.

this is my first 'listen' to one of his books and it went quite well (although people look at you out of the corners of their respective eyes when you burst out laughing in public places for no apparent reason, dash it all!)

the reader was good, maybe very good. occasionally he mixed a characer or two, and his impression of an american accent is, well, enlightening.

at some point i think i am just going to go to the very beginning of wodehouse's work and read them straight through.

as usual, format two worked fine for me.

cheers.

The napkin dinner scene, omg hilarious

Very grossed out when the narrator does the nasty slurping sound for the fat Uncle! Ew please stop. And young Bingo get's real annoying I've had about all I can bare of his character. BUT about 3 hours in I was so tickled by the hilarious napkin scene between Bertie and the girl that it boosted my entire opinion of the book! Great writing, very amusing, a delight as usual. Perhaps my favorites in the Jeeves series so far

One of my all-time favorites!

Jonathan Cecil is simply, in my opinion, the best narrator for the Jeeves stories. Everything about this audiobook is excellent!

Jonathan Cecil is an amazing reader. Lots of belly laughs. Will listen to the others in this Wodehouse series with Cecil reading.

Love it!

So wonderful. This collection of stories is woven together in a way that makes it easy to forget that it isn’t a novel. The performance of the voice talent is first rate. Well done Plum. Well done Mr. Cecil.

Book Two: Bertie tries to help his friend Bingo

As soon as I finished the first book, My Man Jeeves, I downloaded this second book in the series, I was apprehensive at first because it was not narrated by Simon Prebble, as was book one. Prebble is amazing! But, no need to worry. Jonathan Cecil is excellent as the narrator, or may I say he is the performer. He puts his heart into the story and I believe he portrays the characters just as Wodehouse intended them. Cecil puts true emotion into each line, but he does not overdo it. Just perfect.

This story is mostly set in England, with a little of New York thrown in. It is the very early 1900a.The book starts with the wealthy and idle Bertie and his man Jeeves being a little annoyed with one another. This results in Bertie having to help his friend, Bingo, who is in love with a different woman every few days, without Jeeve's wise counsel. The consequences are hilarious. I laughed out loud so much my husband wanted to know what was going on. Even if nothing is happening, Bertie's expressions are funny. His customary greeting of "Hello, Hello, Hello, What?" is totally charming. There are hundreds of phrases or analogies furnished by Bertie that make the book so funny. In my opinion, Wodehouse was a genius, He was genuinely witty and was a most talented writer and storyteller. Now I am off to book number three.
