Publisher's summary

Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who, with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership, fought for his people's land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy.

Drawing on firsthand research and his culture's rich oral tradition (rarely shared outside the Native American community), Marshall reveals many aspects of Crazy Horse's life, including details of the powerful vision that convinced him of his duty to help preserve the Lakota homeland, a vision that changed the course of Crazy Horse's life and spurred him confidently into battle time and time again.

The Journey of Crazy Horse is the true story of how one man's fight for his people's survival roused his true genius as a strategist, commander, and trusted leader. And it is an unforgettable portrayal of a revered human being and a profound celebration of a culture, a community, and an enduring way of life.

"A vivid, haunting biography that acknowledges the author's boyhood hero worship but avoids hagiography....This book adds spirit and life to our understanding of this enigmatic and important man." (Publishers Weekly)
"Marshall does a good job of bringing Crazy Horse to life by examining all his milestones....A highly readable, as-accurate-as-the-record-allows study of the nineteenth-century's best-known Lakota chief." (Booklist)

It was a spriitual journey as well

The fact that the Native American author read his own words leant authenticity to the book.. His voice resonates the spirituality of telling the story of one of the most amazing of Native Americans. The book is very well written and is a wealth of information about Crazy Horse, his People and the way of life he sacrificed himself to defend. A very noble telling of the story.

An excellent listen

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. It changed my perspective on Native American history. I have a lot of coursework in Indian and white relations. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get the complete story and set the record straight.

Awesome true portrayal of a man. Great book!!

I had never read anything about crazy horse. This gave me a true authentic view of the man not the myth. If you want a true realistic interpretation of who crazy horse was this is a great way to learn about him.

Excellent and Balanced

Author did a wonderful job unfolding the intricacies of the story. His ability to help the hearer make real life contemporary connections to Lakota thought was incredible.

Crazy Horse’s life and leadership are worth emulating, especially for young and aspiring leaders. Humility, servitude, and quiet strength that put others at ease would be a welcome contrast in businesses and communities that often expects ‘big and loud’ as leaders.

I look forward to hearing more from Mr. Marshall. Great work! Worth the listen.

Soulful, sad and inspirational.

I thoroughly enjoyed this detailed look at the man inside of the myth who is and was Crazy Horse. It was hard to listen to because you get a sense for the depth of everything that was lost when the Lakota were finally placed on reservations. I especially liked the way that whites were viewed through the eyes of the Lakota people as being basically insane (my interpretation).
