Publisher's summary

Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who, with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership, fought for his people's land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy.

Drawing on firsthand research and his culture's rich oral tradition (rarely shared outside the Native American community), Marshall reveals many aspects of Crazy Horse's life, including details of the powerful vision that convinced him of his duty to help preserve the Lakota homeland, a vision that changed the course of Crazy Horse's life and spurred him confidently into battle time and time again.

The Journey of Crazy Horse is the true story of how one man's fight for his people's survival roused his true genius as a strategist, commander, and trusted leader. And it is an unforgettable portrayal of a revered human being and a profound celebration of a culture, a community, and an enduring way of life.

Critic reviews

"A vivid, haunting biography that acknowledges the author's boyhood hero worship but avoids hagiography....This book adds spirit and life to our understanding of this enigmatic and important man." (Publishers Weekly)
"Marshall does a good job of bringing Crazy Horse to life by examining all his milestones....A highly readable, as-accurate-as-the-record-allows study of the nineteenth-century's best-known Lakota chief." (Booklist)

Beautifully done

Joseph M. Marshall III has become one of my favorite storytellers/author. This is the third book I’ve completed and am hungry for more. The true story of Crazy Horse will have you in tears. In my opinion this should be a staple in history classes. The inaccuracies we are taught of the way Native Americans were treated in our current curriculum is astonishing. Do yourself a favor and read or listen to this book. You’ll gain insight to the real history of a large part of US history.

This is a beautiful and tragic story of the Lakota. If you live in the U.S., you should know this story. Heartbreaking and inspiring. This listen was a great journey. Thank you Joseph Marshall and all the Lakota.

Draws you in deep and deeper

Intriguing and alluring story telling of a Native American figure I truly knew little about. It makes we want to seek out and learn more of both Crazy Horse and other historical accounts of Native American life before and during the westward expansion. Narrator/Author is excellent and pulls you in.

Liked it

I quite like the Lakota culture and the conscientious way the narrator speaks. This one is not bad, but I have enjoyed more other of this author audio books.

solid biography

This reads more like a history of the Sioux wars rather than a strict biography of Crazy Horses life. The strength of this book is that it tells the story of his life through the eyes of a member of his tribe. The weakness is that it doesn't feel like it has great depth. The battle of Little Bighorn just kind of happens without much set up or context. We hear about a lot of major incidents in the war but we don't really get a sense of what they mean in terms of the larger battle between the Sioux and the whites. Still there was a lot to learn by reading this and I think it's a good starting point if you want to learn more about Native American history.
