Publisher's summary
Ayla, one of the most remarkable and beloved heroines in contemporary fiction, continues to explore the world and the people around her with curiosity, insight, and, above all, courage.
As the story opens, Ayla, Jondalar, and their infant daughter, Jonayla, are living with the Zelandonii in the Ninth Cave - a shelter of stone. Ayla has been chosen as an acolyte and has embarked on the arduous task of training to become a spiritual leader. The wisdom that Ayla gained from her struggles as an orphaned child, alone in a hostile environment, strengthen her as she moves closer to leadership of the Zelandonia.
Whatever the obstacles, Ayla’s inventive spirit produces new ways to lessen the difficulties of daily life: searching for wild edibles to make delicious meals, experimenting with techniques to ease the long journeys the Zelandoni must take, honing her skills as a healer and a leader. And then, there are the Sacred Caves, the caves that Ayla’s mentor - the Donier, the First of the Zelandonia - takes her to see. These caves are filled with remarkable art - paintings of mammoths, lions, aurochs, rhinoceros, reindeer, bison, bear. The powerful, mystical aura within these caves sometimes overwhelms Ayla and the rituals of initiation bring her close to death. But through those rituals, Ayla gains A Gift of Knowledge so important that it will change the world.
Spellbinding drama, meticulous research, fascinating detail, and superb narrative skill combine to make The Land of Painted Caves a captivating, utterly believable creation of a long ago civilization that serves as an astonishing end to this beloved saga.

Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

For centuries the Túatha Dé Danann lived in peace on an island where time flowed more slowly and the seasons were gentle - until that peace was shattered by the arrival of invaders. The Gaels, the Children of Milesios, came looking for easy riches and conquest, following the story of an island to the west where their every desire could be granted. Repetitive
I loved the first 4 books the most. The story is wonderful & I love the characters. The author retells the same things over and over it’s exhausting to re listen to stuff from the previous stories. I understand wanting a reader to be able to pick up a single book in a series and enjoy it without being totally lost, but holy smokes. It is too much! The books could be so much better & shorter if we didn’t have to relive the previous books and their contents. Combine them if they are too short or just end the story. Move on!

Loved the Series, but....
I felt like Jean was trying to make the story longer by repeating herself... constantly. Not only events from the previous books, but from this book as well. I found it extremely annoying. If not for that I would have rated this 5 stars.

Boring!
I've read every book in the series, all of them could be a little boring due to trying to explain the historical aspect, but this one was just simply horrible. there was more historical than story to it and it was a struggle to get through. the narrator did a good job though.

amazing ending to this series!
I absolutely love this book, I was a little hesitant upon reading the reviews. I got use to Ayla's accent and it helped define the different characters. This was book was exactly how this series should end. I smiled I cried and I learned some interesting facts about animals, birds, plants. I didn't find this any different the how the other book before this were.
