Publisher's summary
New York Times best seller!
First Katherine Applegate thrilled listeners with the action-packed Animorphs series. Then she stole our hearts with the award-winning The One and Only Ivan. Now she takes us on an unforgettable journey in this first book of an epic middle grade series!
Byx is the youngest member of her dairne pack. Believed to possess remarkable abilities, her mythical doglike species has been hunted to near extinction in the war-torn kingdom of Nedarra.
After her pack is hunted down and killed, Byx fears she may be the last of her species. The Endling. So Byx sets out to find safe haven, and to see if the legends of other hidden dairnes are true.
Along the way, she meets new allies - both animals and humans alike - who each have their own motivations for joining her quest. And although they begin as strangers, they become their own kind of family - one that will ultimately uncover a secret that may threaten every creature in their world.
Building upon the success of her critically acclaimed novels such as The One and Only Ivan, Crenshaw, and Wishtree, while also returning to her action-packed fantasy roots of Animorphs, the Endling series is Katherine Applegate at her finest. With its enthralling characters, unique setting, and gripping adventure, this series is perfect for fans of Rick Riordan, Brian Jacques, and Tui T. Sutherland.

Story
Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all. Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he's seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Story
Eleven-year-old Willodeen adores creatures of all kinds, but her favorites are the most unlovable beasts in the land: strange beasts known as “screechers”. The villagers of Perchance call them pests, even monsters, but Willodeen believes the animals serve a vital role in the complicated web of nature. Lately, though, nature has seemed angry indeed. Perchance has been cursed with fires and mudslides, droughts and fevers, and even the annual migration of hummingbears, a source of local pride and income, has dwindled.

A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Bold engaging story. Read the book first then decided to listen to this. I am always sucked in whenever I hear/read it!

A Plethora of Action
What an amazing journey... full of suspense and action. I listened to this on audible. When I read the book, "The One And Only Ivan," I thought about how Applegate captures the world Ivan lived in, and how touching the story was. After hearing that another book came out by Katherine Applegate, I knew I'd love "The Last: The Endling" I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Would recommend!
Seemed lame at first, but I decided to give it a try so I downloaded it and was not disappointed. The character development is good but other than the fire knight the villains lacked a sense of threat, I feel like there should have been more violence or something to make us fear them- but this is probably a kids book so I get it. Would recommend!!

Endling the last: the best :-)
wonderful book, written well. we already gad a paper copy and learned we loved her writing from reading the one and only Ivan.
So I got this and we listened to it while in the car. took a while only because we mainly listened on the way to and from school. it brought my 3 sons 10, 10 & 8 together. gave us something in common that also gave us conversation and discussions leading to very interesting times. I highly suggest this book and can not wait to read/listen to the next 2 in the series
