About this listen

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Hypnotic listen and nuanced tale

Peter Grainger is unmatched in Brit mystery with his characterization and his mastery of the power of story. And Gildart Jackson is absolutely pitch perfect in bringing both to life and hypnotizing the listener.

As always, a delight with a wee edge

Expertly conveyed with a rye humor andl edgy elegance by both writer and performer. it's a cozy mystery that gets occasionally sinister -- not quite noir, but adjacent -- with writing and plot one wants to allow adequate time for full rising, as in an ancient sourdough. I should like to spend fall and winter as a neighbor of Jo and Smith. Not too close, mind you-- I like my privacy, too.

Another wonderful story by Peter Grainger

I love the charaters in this series. As you listen to the books, they become rich portraits of people you'd like to know(the good guys that is.) This story moves along nicely and the narrator,as always, does an excellent job!!! As referenced in the book, once readers become attached to the "voice" of the story, it is difficult to make a switch. And I do seek out books narrated byGildaet Jackson. This is a wonderful story and I hope the next DC Smith story is on offer SOON! A favorite author and series!!!!!

May Be Best Series of Its Kind

This particular story may lag a bit but spending extra moments with these familiar characters is not begrudged. With his wisdom and wit and sense of justice, David (DC) Smith belongs in the pantheon of modern fictional detectives along with Gamache and Brunetti. Jackson Gildart's phrasing is brilliant.

The richest characters, coupled with perfect narration. I always finish Mr. Grainger’s books too quickly!

David Smith is one of my all time favorite characters. Full of integrity, a dry wit and a penchant for good coffee and a good meal. What’s not to love?

a must for Smith fans!

this is a lovely book with an engaging plot. if it's r e a d out of order with the other books it might be confusing. but for those fans of Peter Grainger this book will be extremely satisfying. the writing is lovely, the sense of place peaceful, and intricate details and the portraits of individuals as good as any writer I know well done Mr Grainger. I feel as though I know DC Smith better than ever and perhaps you too.

Simply excellent

Excellent, as are all the D.C. Smith books! The characters, the plot and the voice of the reader are truly wonderful. I struggle with the tension of wanting to rush through the story but delay its completion.
