Resumen del Editor
The author of the Millennium novels laid out the clues. Now a journalist is following them.
When Stieg Larsson died, the author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo had been working on a true mystery that out-twisted his Millennium novels: the assassination on February 28, 1986, of Olof Palme, the Swedish prime minister. It was the first time in history that a head of state had been murdered without a clue who’d done it—and on a Stockholm street at point-blank range.
Internationally known for his fictional far-right villains, Larsson was well acquainted with their real-life counterparts and documented extremist activities throughout the world. For years he’d been amassing evidence that linked their terrorist acts to what he called “one of the most astounding murder cases” he’d ever covered. Larsson’s archive was forgotten until journalist Jan Stocklassa was given exclusive access to the author’s secret project.
In The Man Who Played with Fire, Stocklassa collects the pieces of Larsson’s true-crime puzzle to follow the trail of intrigue, espionage, and conspiracy begun by one of the world’s most famous thriller writers. Together they set out to solve a mystery that no one else could.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"Fascinating undercover work." (AudioFile magazine)
"Having gained exclusive access to Larsson's trove of research, Stocklassa presents an in-depth look into the investigation. Based on the findings, Swedish police now have a suspect for the first time in years. This well-crafted whodunit will keep readers engaged from start to finish.... This story is sure to gain international traction as the investigation into the Palme assassination heats up again." (Library Journal)
"Larsson buffs won't want to miss this one." (Publishers Weekly)

From day one, the truth behind JFK's assassination has been mired in controversy and dispute. The Warren Commission, established just seven days after Kennedy's death, delved into the who, what, when, and where of the tragedy, and over the course of the following year compiled an 889-page report that arrived at the now widely contested conclusion: Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. In Who Really Killed Kennedy?, Jerome R. Corsi, Ph.D., provides listeners with the ultimate JFK assassination theory book.

A Lie Too Big to Fail asserts the idea that a government can never investigate itself in a crime of this magnitude. Was the convicted Sirhan Sirhan a willing participant? Or was he a mind-controlled assassin? It has fallen to independent researchers like Pease to lay out the evidence in a clear and concise manner, allowing listeners to form their theories about this event. Pease places the history of this event in the context of the era and provides shocking overlaps between other high-profile murders and attempted murders of the time.

On July 27, 1996, a hapless former cop turned hypervigilant security guard named Richard Jewell spotted a suspicious bag in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, the town square of the 1996 Summer Games. Inside was a bomb, the largest of its kind in FBI and ATF history. Minutes later, the bomb remotely detonated by the attacker amid a crowd of 50,000 people. But thanks to Jewell, it only killed two and wounded 111, not the hundreds who authorities estimated could have otherwise died. With the eyes of the world on Atlanta, the games continued.

For decades, government pundits have dismissed these "coincidental" deaths, even regarding them as "myths" as "urban legends." Like most people, Richard and David were initially unsure about what to make of these 'coincidences'. After all, events don't "consult the odds" prior to happening; they simply happen. Then someone comes along later and figures out what the odds of it happening were. Some of the deaths seemed purely coincidental; heart attacks, hunting accidents.

Almost 50 years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, his murder continues to haunt the American psyche and stands as a turning point in our nation’s history. The Warren Commission rushed out its report in 1964, but questions continue to linger: Was there a conspiracy? Was there a coup at the highest levels of government? When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

This is an abridged copy.
I have the hard copy of this book. I noticed right away that there are a lot of skips in the details. it's weird to me to see people say it was too many words, but it's a book, so read the words.

Investigates murder of Swedish Prime Minister
This assassination is unsolved after more than 30 years. I checked the Wikipedia page after listening and saw several theories which this book tied together or addressed nicely.
probably would suggest reading rather than audio book as Kindle version had several good clarifying charts I saw after listening.

Very informative
I do enjoy history very much, and she go my career, my historical interest is always peaked when it involves South African history.
The author did a brilliant job bringing so much information to the front and helping the reader/listener to catch up on parts that may not have been well know.
I agree, that this assassination, can be solved.
I also want to thank the narrator. You did a brilliant job. Being a South African, I did notice a few Afrikaans names and words that were mispronounced, but I was able to follow along easily. I don't like being critical in pronounciation, because I would have probably been rotten at trying to pronounce Swedish names and places.

Interesting but....
A bit hard to listen to as it’s more like a history book. I love history, but seems like there was just too much unnecessary material. I did learn a lot. Unfortunately it has made me even more exasperated with government and bureaucracy everywhere. I think I was looking for more of a story than the investigative reporter narration of their process and conclusions.

Deep dive into the Olof Palme assassination
If you read Scandinavian crime novels there's a good chance you have come across a mention of the Olof Palme assassination. It seems to be very deep in Sweden's national psyche. The topic is undeniably fascinating and if you are looking for some context, this might be up your alley as there is lots of interesting detail in this book.
But it also felt a bit scattered. True crime is often far less satisfying than fictional crime because real life is a lot messier than even the messiest of novels. Some authors have a gift for pulling true crime into a coherent story but I don't think this author always hits the mark. I might give it a pass unless you are a huge fan of Steig Larssson or have a serious interest in the Olof Palme assassination.
