Publisher's summary
In his 17 consecutive best selling novels, Jonathan Kellerman has distinguished himself as the master of the psychological thriller. Now, in Kellerman's most compelling and powerful novel yet, LA psychologist-detective Alex Delaware confronts a long-unsolved murder of unspeakable brutality - an ice-cold case whose resolution threatens his survival and that of longtime friend, homicide detective Milo Sturgis.
The nightmare begins when Alex receives a strange package in the mail with no return address. Inside is an ornate album filled with gruesome crime-scene photos - a homicide scrapbook entitled The Murder Book. Alex can find no reason for anyone to send him this compendium of death, but when Milo views the book, he is immediately shaken by one of the images: a young woman, tortured, strangled, and dumped near a freeway ramp.
This was one of Milo's first cases as a rookie homicide cop: a vicious killing that he and his partner failed to solve because the department closed them down. Being forced to abandon the young victim tormented Milo. But his fears prevented him from pursuing the truth, and over the years he managed to forget.
Now someone has chosen to stir up the past. As Alex and Milo set out to uncover what really happened twenty years ago, their every move is being followed, and their lives are placed in jeopardy. While peeling back layer after layer of ugly secrets, they discover that the murder of one forgotten girl has chilling ramifications that extend far beyond the tragic loss of a single life.

Story
What’s happening in Acker’s Gap, West Virginia? Three elderly men are gunned down over their coffee at a local diner, and seemingly half the town is there to witness the act. Still, it happened so fast, and no one seems to have gotten a good look at the shooter. Was it random? Was it connected to the spate of drug violence plaguing poor areas of the country just like Acker’s Gap? Or were Dean Streeter, Shorty McClurg, and Lee Rader targeted somehow?

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

Tough Tale
The mystery is tough to unravel. New characters add great interest to the story. Milo and Alex remain favorites. Enjoy listening!

Good, But Not Great
The story takes awhile to get started and even when it does get going a bit it still isnt really worth listening to. I think the author did a good job with bringing the characters to life, but failed on making it a strong ending.

Another Great Book From Kellerman
If you could sum up The Murder Book in three words, what would they be?
Consistently Jonathan Kellerman
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was good. I've read almost all of the Alex Delware's stories. Delving into the characters lives again was pure listening pleasure.
What does John Rubinstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Without John Rubinstein I do not think I would enjoy the story as much. His voices and personality he brings to the characters is riveting.

Not great
The sexual descriptions of the women in these books are starting to annoy me. I'm starting to see Alex as a creep.

Poor Alex
Hard to keep track of the many characters. Seems like Kellerman was on something when he tried to put this one together. I felt very sorry for Rick though

I liked it
Granted, I am an Alex Delaware fan. I like Kellerman's earlier works better as he stayed in the area of child psychology, which is his forte. I did enjoy the murder book on audible. I made two attempts at reading it and did not succeed, however, as a listen, it was worth the time. As usual, Kellerman's characters were interesting and the story, while not his best, was engaging.

an ok murder mystery
lots of details and insights to the main character's stuggles with the emotional aspects of investigating and dealing with murders, i would have liked to have the murder's point of view a little more at the front of this book
