Story
In a startling departure, James Lee Burke has written an epic story of love, hate and survival set against the tumultuous background of the Civil War and Reconstruction. At the center of the tale are James lee Burke's own ancestors, Robert Perry, who comes from the slave-owning family of wealth and privilege, and Willy Burke, born of Irish immigrants, a poor boy who is as irreverent as he is brave and decent. Despite personal and political conflicts, both men join the Confederate Army, determined not to back down.

"America's best novelist" ( The Denver Post), two-time Edgar Award winner James Lee Burke is renowned for his lush, suspense-charged portrayals of the Deep South – the people, the crime, the hope and despair infused in the bayou landscape. This stunning anthology takes us back to where Burke's heart and soul beat -- the steamy, seamy Gulf Coast -- in complex and fascinating tales that crackle with violence and menace, meshing his flair for gripping storytelling with his urbane writing style.

Charles Frazier puts his remarkable gifts in the service of a lean, taut narrative while losing none of the transcendent prose, virtuosic storytelling, and insight into human nature that have made him one of the most beloved and celebrated authors in the world. Now, with his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister’s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine. Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape....

In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

Story
In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles (micro-robots) has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour. Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey.

Critic reviews
"One of Burke's best." ( New York Times Book Review)
Editorial Review
James Lee Burke just gets better with age—or so I’ve heard. Don’t @ me, but I somehow haven’t yet listened to his Robicheaux books! With accolades pouring in for The New Iberia Blues, 2019 is the year for me to make amends. Where else to start but at the beginning? The premise of The Neon Rain—in which Detective Robicheaux finds the body of a sex worker in a New Orleans bayou and struggles to get anyone to care—feels especially relevant now, when we’re giving needed attention to cases involving high-risk victims and marginalized communities. The fact that it’s narrated by Will Patton just sweetens the deal, because he’s often considered the definitive voice of the series. That's more hearsay—for now! —Kat J., Audible Editor

In this novel, Burke brings his brilliant feel for time and place to a stunning story of Appalachia in the early 1960s. Here Perry Woodson Hatfield James, a young man torn between family honor and the lure of seedy watering holes, must somehow survive the tempestuous journey from boyhood to manhood and escape the dark and atavistic heritage of the Cumberland Mountains.

Narrator gets the dialect wrong
Anyone who has lived in Louisiana or knows the dialect, prononciation and inflection of people from New Orleans and Acadiana, may find the narration grating. It was like nails on a chalkboard hearing Dave Robicheaux talk like a tourist at times. Great story but I may read the next installment instead of listen.

I really liked the true mystery of this novel and the smoothness. I've only recently begun to listen to Burke, and I am hooked.

Early Robicheaux as good as the older one
Where does The Neon Rain rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
As good as any I have read and better then many.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Hard to turn off. Good mix of characters and sub-plots.
Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to many of Patton's reading. He is perfect for the Burke characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, but I couldn't. It is easy to shut off and pick up again.
Any additional comments?
Burke and Patton always a great combination.

Exceptional
The author has tremendous abilities to craft together his numerous talents with the written word. This is crime novel set in the Deep South. Woven throughout the story are descriptions of people, places and actions.Yet it is all these elements that allow the reader to feel as if he or she is living the actual life of the main character. The atmosphere created by the author allows us to become denizens of the Deep South. There should be a note on
the book cover that says when enjoying the book you need to bring along mosqiuto spray and an umbrella.

Winning combination
From the first sentence I felt like I was smack in the middle of New Orleans. Will Patton's natural inflection aided in the already near perfect ambience of Burke's writing. Strong characters and snappy dialogue add to the experience making this one of my favorite author/narrator combinations to date. Very worth a credit.
