Publisher's summary

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed Hemingway's power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Hemingway has all the feels!

A unique empathy of mourning for the male marlin's loss. Hemingway plucks the heartstrings of readers with his tale of redemption, loss, companionship, perseverance, and fight with oneself. This story is peppered with symbolism which refreshes and renews with each read.

Engaging and entertaining narrator. I love the way he says, "Santiago".

Excellent performance

I could listen to Donald Sutherland for days. This was a wonderful performance of a story that probably everybody has read.

The only issue I had was that the inserts, where they had Sutherland re-record a sentence or two, were not matched to the rest of the recording and so were obvious to the listener.

great read

This story is Hemmingway's last publication which happens to be one of his best books. Donald Sutherland does a fine presentation, you feel the pain of the Old Man Santiago and smell the raw sea environ.

Nice story

It was a very nice story. I didn't like the narrator as well as the story itself.

Lovely, just lovely. The story, the narration. So glad I chose this one. Short, but perfect.

A Hemingway classic on Perseverance

Donald Sutherland's narrative made me feel the loneliness, frustration. patience, and above all the dogged perseverance that the old man felt on his epic fishing trip. ive read this novel many times but I really enjoyed Sutherland's read! A great story to pick you up.when all seems lost.

I enjoyed reading this with my class.

I enjoyed reading this novella with my class. They were really sympathetic toward Santiago, especially, after he finally caught a big fish.
