The Sacred and the Profane
5 novellas of historical fiction, fantasy, & Hispanic identity; the first about Cortez's rebellious interpreter; the second, the sons of Cortez; then the Roman siege of Numantia; the death of a 1940s B actor; and Christopher Columbus signing the New World over to a mega-corp.
Fuentes was part of the Latin literary boom with Cortazar, Marquez, and Llosa. I love Fuentes approach, vacillating between the ugly and poetic, vulgar and divine.
