A delightfully funny, fantastically inventive collection of twenty unearthed short stories by Sir Terry Pratchett, the award-winning and bestselling author and creator of the phenomenally successful Discworld fantasy series. These rediscovered tales were written by Terry Pratchett under a pseudonym for British newspapers during the 1970s and 1980s. The stories have never been attributed to him until now, and might never have been found—were it not for the efforts of a few dedicated fans.

Editorial reviews
Oscar Wilde’s classic endures with its gems of astute observation and cynical wit. The eerie story follows a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty in the form of a supernatural portrait. Life's mysterious paradoxes are laced throughout Lord Henry's brilliant aphorisms. Gray is urged by Henry to "love the wonderful life that is in you." The novel's qualities are mired in decadence, "art for art's sake," the new hedonism of the Victorian-era upper class, and societal moral corruption. Simon Prebble perfectly achieves Lord Henry's "low, languid voice" and sparkling conversation, while avidly expressing the other characters' more torrid emotions. Prebble brings the fable's gothic horror to life, but the more youthful characters lack believable intonation.

Honoré de Balzac uses his classic style of detail to describe a most controversial setting in his novel Le Pere Goriot. The story takes place in Paris just after the fall of Napoleon in 1819. The story focuses on three characters, Rastignac, a student who wants to try and make it big in the capital, Vautrin, an interesting and funny character who is also quite mysterious, and the main character, Goriot, that carries a heavy burden that only a loving parent would endure.

The Diary of a Madman and Other Stories is a bizarre and colorful collection containing the finest short stories by the iconic Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. From the witty and Kafkaesque "The Nose", where a civil servant wakes up one day to find his nose missing, to the moving and evocative "The Overcoat", about a reclusive man whose only ambition is to replace his old, threadbare coat, Gogol gives us a unique take on the absurd.

A member of the landed gentry, with a seemingly guaranteed income from his estate in the country, Oblomov lives in Petersburg, uninterested in the business that provides his living and barely aware that the revenue is diminishing. Not that he leads a dissolute life of extravagance, balls and entertainment. Instead he is a dreamer, a sybarite, content above all to spend most of the day supine, in bed. The novel opens with Oblomov thus ensconced, attended only by his dirty, grumbling, indolent servant Zahar, who has looked after him since childhood, catering to his every need.

Story
Of Human Bondage is one of the greatest novels of modern times, and it is certainly Maugham's greatest achievement. It was published in 1914, when Maugham was at the height of his creative powers. The story concerns Philip Carey, afflicted at birth with a club foot, and his passionate search for truth in a cruel world. We follow his growth to manhood, his educational progress, his first loves, and the wrenching tragedies and disappointments that life has in store for him. In some of the finest prose of the 20th century, Maugham has presented us with the timeless story of one man's search for the meaning of life.

Travelling in Europe with her family, Daisy Miller, an exquisitely beautiful young American woman, presents her fellow countryman Winterbourne with a dilemma he cannot resolve. Story
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, (1860-1904), was born in Russia at Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. His name has become synonymous with a certain literary style much admired and widely copied since his death. Typically, a Chekhov story is a "mood", a state of mind, usually with regard to relations between one person and another. Under the influence of the constant, infinitesimal, and unforeseen pinpricks of life, there occurs a gradual transformation of that state of mind.

A characteristically cunning play on identity and deception, the novel concludes “ I am Sebastian, or Sebastian is I, or perhaps we both are someone whom neither of us knows.”

Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life; indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The novel was a succès de scandale, and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at the Old Bailey in 1895. Raymond Carver called Anton Chekhov "the greatest short story writer who has ever lived". This unequivocal verdict on Chekhov's genius has been echoed many times by writers as diverse as Katherine Mansfield, Somerset Maugham, John Cheever, and Tobias Wolf. While his popularity as a playwright has sometimes overshadowed his achievements in prose, the importance of Chekhov's stories is now recognized by readers as well as by fellow authors. Their themes - alienation, the absurdity and tragedy of human existence - have as much relevance today as when they were written.

A Study of Shallowness & Vanity
In this dark and tragic commentary, Oscar Wilde spares no liberties in discussing morality, religion, society, and the depths of the human condition. This is a book in which beauty seems to be considered as an end in itself — except that Dorian’s great love of beauty ought to have induced in him such a revulsion at the growing ugliness of his character.
Dorian Gray is beauty in human form. His friend Basil Hallward, a painter, sees Dorian's beauty and is driven to portray it on canvas. Per Dorian's wish, he will remain beautiful, and Basil's portrait will bear the ravages of his soul. Basil's homoerotic fascination with Dorian, and its expression in his portrait of Dorian, will unwittingly lead to tragedy.
Overall: This is a deep novel, and requires some thinking about the lessons and messages throughout the writing. It's "a book that has never finished saying what it has to say."

Like Dorian this story is Ageless. BRILLIANT.
To my shame I have never read any Wilde so purchased this 'Deal of the Day' and listened to it in one exquisite sitting. I was enthralled. Oscar Wilde writes with such heart that you get to know the characters so quickly. Although 'Dorian Gray' was originally' published in 1890 it could have been written yesterday as it's language stands the test of time. So easy to read and relate to.
A story about one's inner battles between good and evil. An illustration of man's soul and how one can live seemingly without 'heart'. However knowing that there are consequences of whom no one is exempt as there is always a price to pay regardless of one's 'class'.
This volume was made more enjoyable by another great performance by Simon Prebble.
Highly recommended.

Phenomenal writing
What made the experience of listening to The Picture of Dorian Gray the most enjoyable?
I first read this when I was in my early 20's and at that age, the significance and quality of writing didn't impress. Now that I am in my late 60's, I was stunned to find this book so captivating, it was difficult to put it down. Oscar Wilde wrote brilliantly and so captured the withering of Dorian Grays life as well as those experiences that change us. Admiration indeed for such a wonderful writer!
Have you listened to any of Simon Prebble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Simon Prebble was the perfect narrator for this piece. His maturity, inflections and capacity to express the varied emotions of the characters was just right. I will be seeking other works by this talented narrator.
Any additional comments?
I heartily recommend this book for both the content and the storytelling. Lessons are abundant and despite its 1891 writing, much of what is presented can be compared to life today.

Not my cup of tea
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I really have been trying to listen to books that are considered must reads. This book just moved so slowly that it bored me.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I already knew the premise of this book so the ending was no surprise.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration like the story wasn't anything special. I think I have been spoiled by narrations that incorporate sound effects. Or maybe its the readings that sound like they actually are enthusiastic about the material past just reading it.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I've listened to several books from this period, they are just not for me. If you like this style of writing then enjoy! I found the story to be really dull with an odd emphasis on details of things that didn't add to the overall story.

The villain you want to love.
Incredibly descriptive and captivating. The plot really thickens in the last quarter of the book and regardless of Dorian's good fortune and abundance of luck, karma catches up to him. Absolutely fantastic read!
