Resumen del Editor

The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of 12th century England, this is Ken Follett's historical masterpiece.

Featured Article: The Best Historical Fiction Audiobooks

Often based on real people, events, and scenarios, historical fiction gives us the opportunity to learn about worlds and times we will never experience while introducing fascinating characters and stories set in their midst. Sometimes, the genre can even give us a peek into hidden storylines that routinely go unmentioned in traditional history books, showing us that those of ages past are perhaps not so different from ourselves.

Great read

Would you listen to The Pillars of the Earth again? Why?

I will definitely read this book again. The characters are rich and deep. The setting, 1150AD is an unusual setting for a book. I found it very interesting the discussions not only of the cathedral architecture, but the domestic architecture as well. Ken Follett does a wonderful job of highlighting and exploring human character. Now the characters are like old friends.

Have you listened to any of John Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

John Lee has a deep rich voice but still has the capacity to make subtle changes to delineate characters. His voice wraps around the unfolding plot like a warm blanket on a cold winter night.

Any additional comments?

I loved the forward by Ken Follett explaining his impetus for writing the book and his challenges in completing it. I want to listen to this again so I can get the book on cathedral architecture he read. If he liked it, it has to be good!

Best Ken Follett book period!!!

WOW!! I've seen the series on Starz first and I thought hay not bad!! So I've read about ten Follett books and John Lee as the narrator and love them. I've always saved Pillars because I know the story, mistake!!! This is one of my favorite books so far I couldn't put it down and hated when it ended... The book story is better and different than the series. The only thing I can say is you must read this book. I found a treasure I've had for a year and never took them time to listen!! That's when you know you have a great book. After you finish this book go straight to World Without End it's great too Ken picks up 100 years after Pillars ended!!!!

One of my favorite books.

I loved the history throughout the story.
The book was so visual that it was better than a video of the story.

Great book, can't put it down.

If you could sum up The Pillars of the Earth in three words, what would they be?

Great page turner.

What did you like best about this story?

Pillars of the Earth takes you through two generations of people and is very historically correct. It is almost like stepping back into time and watching these people live.

Which character – as performed by John Lee – was your favorite?

Each of the characters are so well developed and you get so evolved with each of them it is hard to pick just one favorite but I guess my one favorite pick would be Jack's mothers.

Who was the most memorable character of The Pillars of the Earth and why?

Lady Adalainna would be the most memorable and another favorite, for her strength of character.

Any additional comments?

This is a very long book but worth the time, I have listened to it twice now and am sure I willl to it again.
