Publisher's summary

Now a major motion picture.

Adventure? Yes, more than one! Derring-do? Yes! Storms? Sea monsters? Rival pirates? Of course! Cameos by frequently anachronistic historical figures? You betcha! All that and more.

Not since Moby-Dick.... No, not since Treasure Island.... Actually, not since Jonah and the Whale has there been a group of seafarers to rival The Pirates! and their leader, the greatest ocean-faring hero of all time, the immortal Pirate Captain, who, although he lives for months at a time on the bounding main, somehow manages to keep his beard silky and in good condition.

Critic reviews

"Be it an odd and funny book about a roguish pirate captain, Charles Darwin, and a radioactive elephant ye seek, then seek ye no more!" (Entertainment Weekly)

"Prose Prozac for the nautically inclined.... gently satiric and genuinely funny.... a seaworthy little page-turner.... Rated: Aaarrr!" (The Village Voice)

"Hilarious. Destined to become a classic of pirate comic fiction." (Eric Idle)

A true treasure

Hilarious adventures with the pirate captain. Amazing performance with witty humor and you get two stories.

Hilarious

This pairing of the first two novels of the Pirates! series is super funny! Pirate captain with his glorious beard and love of ham and his rag tag crew of pirates get themselves into the most hilarious situations (i.e adventures)! I found myself chuckling out loud at some things they got up to. Thoroughly enjoyable listen even if it does get a little silly. John Lee does an awesome job narrating, Fingers crossed that he does the other books in this series as well!

As fantastic a reading as the captain's beard

John Lee's performance absolutely brought the story and characters to life - much better than the movie version of the first story in this collection. There is an art to telling a humorous story with just the right amount of seriousness to make it even more hilarious, and it is achieved here to the highest level. This is an audiobook that my son wants to listen to over and over (and over), and that I really enjoy too.

I took off one star for Audible's "story" rating because the plot dragged a bit in the second story, but the writing is great all throughout and we were never bored listening to it (even for the Nth time).

Good for adolescents

Slapstick humor. Didn’t care for it, I guess you have to be in the right frame of mind or drunk to appreciate it.
