Providing dementia care is profoundly stressful for families and caregivers. People with dementia or Alzheimer’s experience emotional distress, which leads to behavioral complications and the need for institutional care. However, if families and caregivers are able to identify the emotional needs caused by dementia and understand which skills are lost and which remain, they can lower the behavioral complications and their own stress.

This audiobook made me feel less alone.
I chose this audiobook because I help care for my grandma who has dementia. Some days are really hard, and I didn’t always know what to do or say. This audiobook helped me a lot. I liked that it was written by a doctor, but the words were still easy to understand. It gave clear tips on how to handle tough behavior, like when my grandma gets upset or confused. It also taught me how to talk to her in a calm and simple way, which really works. This audiobook made me feel less alone. It gave me hope and real tools I can use every day. I’m really glad I listened to it.

Understanding dementia brings a measure of peace
This book is an invaluable guide for caregivers assisting someone who suffers from dementia. I feel more confident about this advice because the book was written by a doctor. It's great that the author included a PDF copy of the entire book for listeners to download. What a bonus! The chapter on knowing when the support is beyond your control was the most impactful to me. Tania Mannion is the narrator of the audiobook, and she does a great job. She conveys compassion, which helped me during those moments when the topic hit close to home. Sam, thank you for writing this book!

Helped me feel stronger and more capable
This audiobook was both the information and reassurance that I needed during a time when everything was feeling overwhelming. I appreciated that it explained what my loved one was likely experiencing without making it feel clinical or distant. The small tips were just as helpful as the big ones, especially regarding daily routines and not burning out. What impressed me was how it made caregiving feel less overwhelming. In spite of the difficulty, I finished this feeling more prepared and more connected to others who are going through the same.

A Clear comforting guide for dementia caregiver
This audiobook is incredibly helpful for anyone caring for a loved one with dementia. It breaks down complex medical information in a way that’s easy to understand, and it gives a lot of practical advice you can actually use day to day. I really appreciated the clear tips on how to handle tough behaviors and communicate more calmly and effectively—especially during moments when my loved one is confused or upset. What I found most valuable is how it not only focuses on helping the person with dementia, but also reminds caregivers to take care of themselves too. There are helpful suggestions on how to avoid burnout and stay emotionally balanced, even on the hardest days. It also includes a downloadable PDF of the book, which makes it easy to go back and look at the tips whenever you need a refresher. Overall, it gave me a better understanding of what my loved one is going through and made me feel more confident in how I support them. This audiobook brought both clarity and comfort, and I’m really glad I listened to it.
