About this listen

In this sequel to The Princess and the Goblin, Curdie has returned to his life as a miner and has dismissed the supernatural happenings of the past, believing them to have been a dream. When Curdie callously wounds a pigeon, his conscience leads him to Princess Irene's mystical great-great-grandmother for help. She has him plunge his hands into a pile of rose petals that burns like fire. Extraordinarily, this grants him the power to see what kind of "animal" a person is at heart.

She then sends him on a quest, accompanied by a peculiar doglike creature named Lina, who was once a human. However, Curdie must resolve his own skepticism before he can use the powers granted to him to defeat the evil that is threatening the future of the kingdom.

A little too much medicine in the dogfood.

You may have heard that if you put medicine in dog food the dog won't even know he's eating medicine. Well in the case of this story the allegorical elements are so obvious that it would seem the plot itself takes second chair. The story almost seems hindered by the multitude of moral lessons it carries. I'd say the medicine to dogfood ratio is a tad high in this one.

Another wonderful George MacDonald book

After reading The Princess and the Goblin, I couldn't wait to listen to this one. It was just as good as The Princess and the Goblin. Again, the narrator was excellent.

Profound, yet beautifully simple

This is one of my favorite books! It's profound while still beautifully simple... like a fairytale that has hidden meanings. I have listened to this book over many times.

Nothing Beats a George Macdonald Fantasy

I love getting lost in a good book and no other books accomplish that purpose more than those fantasy stories by George Macdonald.

riveting

From before being to end the story was captivating. In its own winsomeness way it spoke of the hearts of man. Excellent

Should probably not be a child's book.

It's a downgrade from the first and still has many problematic themes, but I have a soft spot for it. I have the feeling that this either isn't a book George MacDonald wanted to write or one he was so harrassed over that he finished it out of spite.

The ending is kind of out of left field, and may or may not ruin the story for you. I see it as him definitively ending the story so no more books could be demanded of this story.
