About this listen
When Will Bentley was nine years old, he promised his dying father that he would take care of the family.
Growing up quickly, Will provided whatever his mother and sister needed, whether that meant putting food on the table, fixing a leaky roof, or driving off troublemakers.
This became more than Will's duty. It became his identity. Then war took him away.
Now, Will's coming home to Texas.
Caring for his family and the intriguing young woman next door will be a tall order. The economy is dead, corrupt bluebellies are on the prowl, and old enemies want Will's land, his women, and his life.
It's enough to break a man. But Will Bentley is no ordinary man. He is The Provider.
The Provider is a classic Western with a touch of romance. It's perfect for fans of C.J. Petit and R.O. Lane.

Story
United States Marshal War Adams stared at the telegram in disbelief. His father had been murdered? As difficult as it was to come to grips with the news, it would become more disturbing when he discovered that the person arrested for the crime was the nurse that his father had hired to ease his suffering from his killing disease. Her position gave her both the means and opportunity to commit the crime, and he knew that the nurse was the same woman whose husband he had shot and killed years earlier, giving her the motive.

Story
The war was ending for Captain Eugene Stewart. He and the rest of the 85th Illinois would soon be mustered out and he’d return home to Peoria. After he entered his tent, he found a thick envelope from his mother sitting on his cot. When he unfolded the pages, another envelope fell to the ground. He picked it up and noticed the heavy hand that had written the address. It hadn’t been sent to him with the army but was forwarded by his mother. After reading his mother’s letter, he stared at the sealed envelope and thought about tossing it into the fire rather than reading it.

The only place that came to mind was the hidden valley northwest of town. It was owned by a loner named Marsh Anderson, whom she had never met. She was going to have to bet her life that he wouldn’t turn her in to the sheriff, the brother of her dead husband.

Story
No one had seen the innocuous rock on the long climb to the pass on the Oregon Trail, and when the last covered wagon in the long line rolled onto the lump of granite, it shouldn’t have made much of a difference, but it caused almost instant tragedy. Just seconds later, the wagon plunged over the edge of the narrow trail, then began its deadly, tumbling roll into the abyss, spewing its contents as it fell to its destruction. Her precious children had been trapped inside, and Rebecca could only watch in horror. Her children had been her life, and now she had nothing.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

THE PROVIDER
This is a good story. Will comes home from the war and finds everything has changed. His home has been stolen (Legally) by the carpet baggers. They control the whole town. He has to fight them off. Will saved his sister from a bad ordeal. And he starts a relationship with Maggie. He along a very few friends takes on the carpet Baggers that's controlling everything. There is a lot of action and a big fight at the end. This is a good start to the series. After listening to this I want to see what happens in the rest of the series. It was easy to keep up with everyone. A.T. Chandler does a great job narrating this book. If my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Thank you.

Fun story of an all American young man with a heart of gold and love of family
so I actually have listened to this story cover to cover 3 times now. Something I rarely do, even if I love a book I rarely go back to it. A little short compared to what I'm used to, but theres something to be said in me listening to it multiple times.
I love exploring the male perspective, and Will although a young man was an interesting character. The romance was sweet, two babies finding and being in love(I'm just 3 years older than Will but they're babies to me lol). Looking forward to the rest of the series and more from this author, love finding my kind of people!

I felt bad about how things were back durinh the Reconstuction. especially in Texas.
How fast Will and Maggie fell in love. I imagine if that happened today. they would skip the preacher and get a motel/hotel room.

Really???
Loved the justice series - my first deacon series so was excited to start a new one. This is horrible. Can't get past the childish attraction and lengthy descriptions of Maggie and his ridiculous instant attraction. thought the mush would stop and get back to a true western, but it just kept going on and on till I could take no more. too bad because that's the last time I'll read/listen to another of his books !
