Publisher's summary

This lavish visual history—featuring over 180 all-new illustrations—is a stunning introduction to House Targaryen, the iconic family at the heart of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.

For hundreds of years, the Targaryens sat the Iron Throne of Westeros while their dragons ruled the skies. The story of the only family of dragonlords to survive Valyria’s Doom is a tale of twisty politics, alliances and betrayals, and acts both noble and craven. The Rise of the Dragon chronicles the creation and rise of Targaryen power in Westeros, covering the history first told in George R. R. Martin’s epic Fire & Blood, from Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros through to the infamous Dance of the Dragons—the bloody civil war that nearly undid Targaryen rule for good.

Packed with all-new artwork, the Targaryens—and their dragons—come vividly to life in this deluxe reference book. Perfect for fans steeped in the lore of Westeros, as well as those who first meet the Targaryens in the HBO series House of the Dragon, The Rise of the Dragon provides a must-have overview for anyone looking to learn more about the most powerful family in Westeros.

nothing new

I didn't personally pick up on any new information. This is just more to the point version of fire and blood.

Ugh another History book

Harry Lloyd is stellar as always. Nothing will sate my GoT appetite except book 6. BTW see "Fire & Blood" for the "original" version of this.

Spoiler alert: EVERYONE DIES. lol

If you’re a GoT geek, you’ll love this. It is an animated genealogy of The Seven Kingdoms, but do know that this is not a story with a plot.

Another great Game of Thrones prequel

This book does follow a similar narration to the other companions to the song of ice and fire. However, I find it well written, and I must have for any fan of the series. It is very well done, and answers quite a few questions raised by the original series. I actually cannot wait for the next addition to the song of ice and fire canon. I am hoping to see more of the Dunk and Egg Series. Although it would be even more awesome, if we could get some history and short stories related to Essos or Ashai.

Targaryen History and Background

It is super interesting to learn more background history of the Targaryens and learn more about the lineage of the family. I heard that this is a great book to read first before Fire & Blood so I’m excited to read that later on and have a better understanding of the family and how their conquest and reigns began.

P.s. I LOVED that the narrator was Harry Lloyd who portrayed the character of Viserys Targaryen, Daenerys’ brother, in Game of Thrones. His voice was much more easy to listen to.

House of the Dragon

A well done book to prepare for House of the Dragon, though it appears to be an unabridged of much of the information from Fire And Blood volume 1. Still, a fine effort by all 4, authors and narrator.

Not as in depth as Fire & Blood but still very enjoyable

Very good if you want a short story of this dynasty but fire & blood gives a lot more information and stories. Still very good
