The Gift of Sabbath

It was so vibrant to hear the deeper meaning of the Sabbath. Thank you for allowing me to learn and understand what God desired Sabbath rest to be.

The reader butchers the Jewish names

This is not great for a book about something so close to the Jewish heart

Jewish wisdom read like...a business book?

As another person has pointed out, the narration is rather lacking for anyone already familiar with Judaism and/or Hebrew. I can understand that most narrators probably don't know Hebrew pronunciation but to hear "mitzvot" pronounced with an American accent so heavily that it rhymes with "not" and "taught" is jarring and distracting. "Midrash" here ends up pronounced as rhyming with "crash" 😬. That said, Hebrew words are much fewer than 5% of the words in this book. What most distracted me is that this book, meant to be educational and inspiring Jewish philosophy, is read like a business book, as if discussing Shabbat were like reading How to Win Friends and Influence People.

The narrator clearly has no emotional reverence or other attachment to the content, making the content more difficult to absorb and appreciate. Go listen to a YouTube recording that has a historical archive of Heschel himself speaking - there's an immense difference. It's worth listening through audio book only if you wouldn't otherwise read the book form.

Thought provoking and profound

A detailed philosophical discussion of the Sabbath. The concept is deceptive in its simplicity but when one thinks about it there’s a lot more to it.

Concerning the Sabbath

I can't speak to the perspective of others nor the orators skills with Hebrew words, but the content of the Rabbi's text is fundamental to all as Jew's or Christian profession of the need for Sabbath. Just brilliant.

I will listen and re-listen to this and the physical book as often as possible.
