About this listen
*WINNER OF THE BOLLINGER EVERYMAN WODEHOUSE PRIZE FOR COMIC FICTION 2023*
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
‘Funny, clever and sweet’– Sunday Times
‘The much loved comic proves adept at noirish fiction in a debut whose surrealist humour sets it apart’ – Observer
My name is Gary. I’m a thirty-year-old legal assistant with a firm of solicitors in London. To describe me as anonymous would be unfair but to notice me other than in passing would be a rarity. I did make a good connection with a girl, but that blew up in my face and smacked my arse with a fish slice.
Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan. When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub. He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway. When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex. But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers.
And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of South London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life…
A story with a cast of unforgettable characters, The Satsuma Complex is the brilliantly funny smash hit first novel by bestselling author and comedian Bob Mortimer.

Before he could walk, Ed already knew that he preferred poached salmon to puree, that celery was a calorie-sapping waste of time, and that mashed potatoes should be made with lashings of butter. Whilst he might ordinarily have been upset by the calls of 'precocious little s--t' coming from his family, he was too busy stuffing his gob and staging rebellions against the patronising list of misery that is a children's menu.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

A bad best man’s speech can ruin a wedding. Why do we plan every detail of a perfect day and then give the groom’s idiot best friend five minutes of total power? Enter Nate (Glen Powell), a speechwriter-for-hire who helps people write incredible best man speeches. To keep the best man from embarrassing himself (and the newlyweds), Nate uses his list of don’ts: Don’t mention the exes, don’t be rated R, and don’t bum everyone out. Nate’s system never fails. That is, until he meets Dan (Nicholas Braun).

The gifted filmmaker, corduroy activist and amateur dentist, Richard Ayoade, first chanced upon a copy of The Two-Hander Trilogy by Harauld Hughes in a second-hand bookshop. At first startled by his uncanny resemblance to the author's photo, he opened the volume and was electrified. Terse, aggressive, and elliptical, what was true of Ayoade was also true of Hughes's writing, which encompassed stage, screen, and some of the shortest poems ever published.

Where do comedians come from? Why is it that one person is a funny bloke down the pub while another actually makes a living by standing up in front of an audience telling jokes? And where does all that material come from? Well, young Lee McKillop used to wonder that too. Growing up in his parents’ pub, small and wiry in a world of bigger and chunkier specimens, Lee quickly learned that cracking jokes was a way to get attention.

From a young age, Ed Gamble's immaculate bibs and extremely dirty nappies hinted at his capacious appetite.

Over the course of the series, David eats his lunchtime sandwiches with children in a primary school and later goes to a street market to see manners - good and bad - in action. He explores where our manners come from with Professor Steven Pinker from Harvard University and the author Henry Hitchings. What do we mean by 'civility' and 'good manners' in public places? Why are people still pinching vicars' bottoms, and what can the state do to improve standards of public behaviour? And, David asks, how is the digital age changing our sense of public space?

Quite Pleased With What It Achieves
I was expecting to be amused, but I was surprised at how entertaining the entire story was. The plot was good, the characters engaging, and even though there are a minimum of duck references, I didn't feel short changed.
I was a little concerned when I saw two narrators on the audio version, but thankfully it wasn't done like a two-hander. The recording quality isn't uniform throughout and there's a stumble or two that didn't get edited out, but they in no way took away from the story.
I look forward to Mr. Mortimer's next book. And a slice of Battenburg.

I feel like I’ve just had a quick glimpse of what it must be like inside the mind of Bob Mortimer, and boy how truly wonderful it is in there! I can’t say I thought I’d be listening to a talking squirrel when I started this book, but that’s Bob in a nutshell. (Pun intended) I truly hope we hear more from Gary,Grace and and Satsuma.

perfect Bob Mortimer
this is a great story by the inimitable Bob Mortimer and I loved it. the performance by Sally Phillips was a perfect addition to Bob's performance.

Lovely twists in the plot!
Nothing actually. It was a lovely read. Typical British sense of humor and the narration was excellent

Bob is the best!
As a fan of bob, this review is biased. I had low expectations of this book, being it’s his first novel, but I truly loved it. Great characters with an imaginative story.

So Much Tension!
First, Sally Phillips is a dream. Second, so is Bob Mortimer. The story telling was fabulous.
I was so tense during so much of this--which I enjoyed because, although I assumed there'd be a favorable conclusion, I was never actually sure--a quality that keeps you in the present of a story. Highly enjoyed, highly recommend!

Bob Mortimer at His Best
First novels are a glimpse into a writer's truest form. This was that and more. Gary is a protagonist that feels like a real person living a real life that is caught up in extraordinary circumstances. It felt like a friend reading you his newest idea for a novel while you laugh and love it more because the telling is so good.
