Publisher's summary

Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of World War II. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the 20th century, The Second World War.

In this searing narrative, which takes us from Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 to V-J day on August 14th, 1945, and the war's aftermath, Beevor describes the conflict and its global reach - one that included every major power. The result is a dramatic and breathtaking single-volume history that provides a remarkably intimate account of the war that, more than any other, still commands attention and an audience.

Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's grand and provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on this complex, tragic, and endlessly fascinating period in world history. It confirms once more that he is a military historian of the first rank.

Long, but SOOO worth the time

There are many facts and stories in this book if which i had never heard, and I consider my self a history nut with a severe focus on WW2.

So to hear stories of other atrocities, such as organized and systematic cannibalism by the Japanese simply floor me. And FYI, Australian, British and US forces were regularly on the menu.
These facts sere never mentioned in war crime trials later.

Why? the victors wanted to put the war and all its horrors, behind them and move forward.

Great book!!

Great book, great narration

This book had good insights into the political struggles between the leaders and generals. Even in the darkest days it was still a struggle for the allies to keep their heads and not lose sight of the goals.

Entertaining and insightful

I never knew how much I didn’t know about WW2. Covered both theaters in equal detail. I’ve read a lot about WW2, having a father who was infantry in pacific theater. Wish I had known the horrible details I learned about in this book before he died. I would have had a much greater appreciation for what he survived and why he was so disturbed. Thank You Mr. Beevor.

One of the best

If you want a in depth complete review of World War II look no further. The narrators voice and impeccable range of accents when reading or speaking from a French, Soviet, German, or American perspective help to weave in personal accounts without getting lost. Very well done, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Pacific theatre

I thought the book was good and very well researched but I thought that the author spent way to little time on the pacific theatre of the war. I felt like he just brushed over a lot of the hard gruesome fighting that was done there. Overall I liked the book though.

Standard history text

well crafted and engrossing storytelling. the history itself seems conventional, not too detailed in operations descriptions in this survey volume but still worth it's space on the shelf
